Dear Leupold...

After being a luepold fan and owner for more than 30 years I no longer buy them the last 6 scopes have all been element optics ziess and nightforce.

Yea but that is for custom ordering a new scope. Remember the price jump prior to the closing of the "old" custom shop. If it reopened scope mods would be cost prohibited!

Frank
Before it closed, I had the reticle changed on a couple scopes I had already bought - so not just for modifying new scopes.

I do remember the price jump - as I remember it was something like $75 to well over $200.
But, Optical Services Co charges $225 for a new reticle, so that seemed to go from a really good deal to just what others charged.

I bought a lot of scopes through Leupold's custom shop. They offered the reticles I prefer and I always liked their scopes. I prefer simple, uncluttered reticles - crosshairs and a dot for me. I don't want or need a "screendoor reticle." Leupold has gone down the path of "more is better" and taken away any option for simple reticles in the custom shop. While I like the Leupolds I have, I haven't bought a new one in a long time. I don't see that changing unless they change their ways. Sadly, Leupold is dead to me.

A revival of the custom shop would be nice but like mentioned above I don’t see it ever happening. Quite a few negative comments in this thread, I’m still a fan of Leupold. They’ve done some things I think were a mistake, I wish they would have never lowered their standards and tried to compete in the value priced optics like the VX-1 and such but that’s their choice to make. I do like some of their new offerings, especially their Mark 5 series for dial and shoot. I’m running a few of those in the 2-10x and 3-18x and they fair well against other scopes in that price range imo. They have a smaller foot print and lighter weight than most too, that’s nice features on a hunting rifle if it works and I’ve had zero problems with them.

I’m not sure their current VX3-HD is as good as the older VariX 3s but that’s just me. I’ve had good luck with their warranty service, really good luck in fact. I do wish they would fix some of the older scopes instead of replace them with a new model but some of those scopes are getting some serious age on them and I can see why they wouldn’t carry parts for all of those older offerings.

You can’t please everyone, that’s a fact and no matter what you do someone won’t like it. At least they try and they haven’t sold out to some foreign corporation, that seems to be happening a lot now days.. Sad in my opinion.

Haven’t sold “yet” … you may have just given the Kiss of Death !!

Money ruins all …. Some things just take a little longer. Once they started trying to compete in ALL price points I think that was the first mistake; time will tell.

I have moved on from Leupold for competition scopes for reasons stated above.
I have switched to Sightron, they have what I need and I now like them better than the Leupolds.
I took a look at Sightron's catalog. They have crosshair/dot reticles in some interesting scopes. Plus they're second focal plane. On top of that, Sightron has a custom shop. There may be more Sightrons in my future.

At this point I have only one Sightron. It's their service rifle scope mounted on an M1A. I'm having a heckuva time with something moving. I don't yet know if it's the scope, the mount or the rifle. Can't be the shooter, right? o_O

If I narrow it down to the scope, I'll send it in for their evaluation. How they take care of things would be a real indicator. I will say that Leupold has been stellar on repairs/replacements.

Part of the problem is they shut the custom shop during covid but the custom shop was a large dedicated space on a small campus and they needed to grow their main floor space so they expanded to use the custom shop space. As in it literally no longer physically exists. It's still on the page because they "may" bring it back but at the same time say they have no idea where they would put it since their floor space is gone.

They are selling a lot to the PRS shooters as well as hunters and faster than they can make them so as a for profit business that still repairs any of their scopes they have parts for under warranty... you get the idea. Sure it's annoying they aren't doing competition scopes under that label, but they are building to where the majority of their customer base is and business is business.

I understand completely jxb. Business is business. They owe it to themselves to deploy resources where they get the best return on investment. They follow the market. My interests seem to fall in a niche market, and niche markets aren't moneymakers for the big guys. I'm probably better served by smaller operations, so that's why I've largely abandoned Leupold. I don't want or need their eyewear, garments or screendoor reticles. It's a pity, because I've considered them a local company worthy of my dollars.

I have and will continue to use several VX-3 scopes. I just would like to have a couple reticles changed and a turret swapped out. I can understand following the market to keep profit up, but please leupold, don't forget us lowely varmint shooters and whitetail hunters that want an upgrade once in a while.

Dear Leupold,

Please bring back your 1" tube VXIII, 4 x 14 X rifle scope with adjustable objectives for us guys that don't need to shoot into the next county and just want a simple and quality scope for hunting. Also, with the old-style easy to see adjustable turret setting indicators.

Does it make any sense to make a 14X scope without some parallax adjustment?

I have one of those and it's very close to being my favorite scope.
4.5-14×50 illuminated with the AO.
