Dead Frozen Critters

When I was a growing up in the Catskills I remember winters the Deer would eat the bark off of the pine trees to keep from starving still lost a few. Very sad.
Where in the Catskills? My Grandfather had a boat building business on Lake Huntington. I spent many summers there, helping with the business and fishing the creeks in the area. Grandpa sold boats to all the Camps and hotels in the area, including Grossinger’s.

The fire ants and pigs wiped out our quail a long time ago, I grew up hunting them here with my dad but I haven’t seen a wild quail in at least 20 years. You can’t lay on the ground here or you will get covered up in the dang things in the matter of minutes. We may be left hunting squirrels this year :(

I didn’t know ants were a problem for quail they are so common in Florida I never really thought about it 20 years ago they weren’t around here in Tennessee but they sure are now

No quail no rabbits here in the Shallotte swamp area either. Coyotes got em.
No quail, pheasants or rabbits left here pet and feral cats then the homeless, all gone for years now, The homeless have moved on feral cats have disappeared. Now the turkeys are taking over the few cats and most of the dogs are terrified of them, a flock of 30 adult birds with a few bad a__ toms even the FEDX man has to watch his step I LIKE TURKEYS, maybe need to find a few stray bunnies bring back the good ole days

Our purple martins began to arrive Feb. 1. We had about 10 when the cold hit . It was very hard on birds that depend on flying insects.I found 3 dead , and have not lowered the houses to check them. I have only seen 2 alive since it warmed up.
Really sad to me as these guys know me , and will sit and watch me working in the garden 10 feet below their houses. They usually return from Venezuela about Valentines day, and I feel pretty sure that many return to our houses year after year.My wife and I have spent many a morning on the porch drinking our coffee and listening to their happy chatter.

I've often wondered how much of a hit wildlife takes during snowstorms!? In 1969 I was living in Bishop, CA. In one night and about until 10 AM the next day we got 4' of snow on the level. The mine of course was shut down for almost a month. My uncle, (after 2 weeks) hopped a ski bus to the town of Mammoth Lakes to work cleaning snow off of houses. He said they didn't need ladders as they just short-hopped on the roof to clean the snow. The Winter of 1969 was my first winter after Vietnam. I didn't pick up a weapon for almost 3 years so I have nothing to measure by except for the snow! I have often wondered...

KSAT-12 News just had a feature on massive bat die-offs here from last week's weather, littering some underpasses where they dropped dead from their typical roosts. We'll see if there's further news say Bracken Cave impacts and this year's Bat Loco festival.

My wife & I saw no real impacts on the suburban deer in our area, we saw a mixed group of 4 mature bucks and ten or more does along our cul-de-sac returning from errands a couple days ago.

Well I didn’t find any more dead critters today, the buzzards and yotes were having a field day though. NE Tx and SE Oklahoma had serious dead loss, I can see the Oklahoma side and from the buzzards they got shafted as well.
