Dead Frozen Critters

You guys up north deal with the bitter cold all the time but down here in Texas we’re not accustomed to it nor are our critters. We have lost a ton of deer and birds, we had at least a hundred doves that roosted in our live oak trees in the back yard and we’ve found no less than half of them dead on the ground where they had fallen out of the trees and have yet to see a live dove since the freeze hit. We’re finding dead deer as well which is truly sad but the true numbers on the deer deaths will never be known.

It looks as though the 2021 deer season will suck for us and we may not even take any deer off our place this year letting the numbers rebound. We’ve found that the older bucks coming off a hard rutting season didn’t fair well when the cold temps hit, the older bucks and the young doe’s appear to be what got hit the worst. The Arctic air definitely took its toll on all of our wildlife down here.

A couple buddy’s own high fenced ranches with exotics and their Axis and Blackbuck herds were hammered, one friend lost over half his animals and the numbers are rising daily as the deer are still dying from the lingering effects of the cold. The economic toll on Texas hunting alone is going to be catastrophic, it’s going to take a long time for the animal populations to recover from this. If your planning a hunting trip to Texas this year you will want to make sure the place your going hasn't been decimated. Some places faired better than others but you will want to confirm before dropping your cash on a hunt.

Wyoming here. Once in a while I find a dead bird in the yard. Froze. Early in the year [last fall] we had a late cold front. Found a few birds in the yard that dint make it..

Spent summers on a hog farm as a teen. I kinda figured they would improvise, adapt and overcome. :/

Seriously that's too bad. But, if they are frozen clean em and they should make good table fare.

This is a true tragedy , it happens up here a bit in winter but my heart goes out to everyone affected including the animals we love so dearly.

That is devastating and I hope it as not as bad as it appears. I read that they were releasing 9,000 sea turtles that they had collected before they froze to death. That is a lot of turtles !

Our wildlife population still hasn't come close to recovering from our 4 year drought in CA and it will take many years of favorable conditions for it to do so.

I’m inside 300 acres of high fenced land with white tails, Aoudad and black buck. Thankfully, I had just stocked up on trail mix before the storm. I had enough to feed them extra and twice a day during the whole cold snap. The herds seem to be close to the same count so I don’t think we lost too many. I’ve only found two dead ones so far. Keeping the water buckets full was a chore, but worth it.

It's sad. Growing up we had plenty.
Now days no quail, groundhogs or foxes...just freaking coyotes.
Saw a groundhog near the house while I’m driving just today have seen as many as 4 at one time on my place but now I haven’t seen one in about a year have very few coyotes because I am fenced in with net wire but they do occasionally get in and get out I’ve killed two over the years and I had a bad fox problem one year as I have chickens and turkeys but after trapping several I think they got the hint haven’t seen any of them in a couple years either even the rabbits seem to fluctuate not very many at the moment
