De-belted magnums?

Is there such a thing as de-belting normally belted cases? Either turn the belts off in a lathe or maybe someone makes custom brass. The .264 and 7mm mags are great in many ways, but the belted case is not so desirable anymore.

you can do it but the reamer has to be custom ground and the belt turned off the brass. but if you headspace a belted mag off of the shoulder in stead of the rim there is really no problem just don't push the shoulders back too far

The shooter should be headspacing off the shoulders, and not the belt, even if the belt is still there.

Like the other viewers have said, headspace off the shoulder. If you can't stand the thought of the belt, look at the Dakota cartridges that are beltless.

Have you ever considered a WSM cartidge? There are lots of variations like the 6.5 wsm,7mmwsm,300wsm,325wsm,35wsm.

You might also look at something based on the 8X68 RWS case. It has roughly the same capacity as a 300 Win Mag but it doesn't have a belt. Norma sells the brass here in the USA and Huntington's Reloading has the RWS brass from time to time. Dave Tooley developed a 6.5, 7mm and 30 cal variations called BooBoos and all are great shooters.

I don't care for belted cases either. Try looking at something based off of the WSM, RUM, SAUM, or RCM cases. Otherwise you can have a standard reamer re-ground to remove the belt portion. Turning the belts off cases would not be hard but probably more trouble than it's worth.

I have never had an issue finding excellent accuracy with belted mags when headspacing off the shoulder.
They always seem to handle more pressure as well, Therefor allowing more speed than similar capacity beltless cartridges.

Interesting. That has got to weaken the pressure rating of the brass right?

It does weaken the base of the brass, particularly primer pockets. Early nineties, necked a 7mm Rem Mag to 6 MM, blew the shoulder out to 40 degrees, had the reamer made with no belt, turned the belts off of the brass, shooting Berger 105's and Sierra 107's. Primer pockets so loose after 2nd firing, I went back bored the chamber for the belt and made new brass. Primer pockets stayed tight through seven or eight reloadings. Barrel only lasted 700 rounds.

That is really interesting doced. So the short mags and rum's must have extra brass on the inside for strength.

I've not noticed loose pockets on mine. when i was testing i used one case and fired it 10 times and no issues. if your charges are hot enough, doesn't matter what kinda brass you're using, they will loosen.

+1 if you are getting loose primer pockets after 1or2 loads you are way too hot IMO. Take a belted mag case and a 30-06 case section them both and see for yourself how much brass is there. If you are moving that much brass that quickly I could only imagine the pressures involved.

I don't think there is any real accuracy difference IF you headspace off the shoulder. Personally I just don't like the way they look not to mention most belted cases have no need for it anyway.

I just lost some winchester (fully prepped AHHHHH) after the first shot!
