Day Two of longrange match

Day two is in the books. Have over 30 shooters so far try their hand at my Longrange Rimfire match. We've seen some very good shooting so far with at least two new shooters to my matches. You can tell this wasn't their first rodeo.

Not sure if many will show up tomorrow, might rain and there are other various types of matches going on tomorrow but that is OK, it'll give me a chance to try out my latest purchase at the targets.

I've always wanted a 40X B heavy barrel gun, finally got one in excellent originial condition. After everyone left Friday evening I got to sit down with it, took the bolt out and lined up on the 50 yard sighter. Checked thru the peeps and the the steel plate was centered, hmmm, the previous owner must have been a shooter.

Stuck a Wolf MT round in and centered that plate, moved over to one of the racks at 50 yards with 1 1/4" circles hanging on it and ran five of them. Pretty cool so far. Checked my Strelok setting for needed adjustment for 197 yards that I use for my Anschutz Exemplar pistol and put in the needed clicks. Was really surprised when they were so precise and exactly what was needed for the Redfield Olympic peeps.

Let my buddy Dale try it first and we had to add another 4 clicks and he had no problem hitting the larger plate. After he left I used Strelok and started back down and got first round hits at 175, 150, 125 and 100 yards on my sighter plates.

Today after the match was over I let others try it and had similiar results. I had a clay pigeon still in the rack as one of my special targets at 197 yards. My Son shot it and took half of it off, second shot took off another chunk, third shot put one thru the middle making a hole but without breaking more off, forth shot went past where the missing piece was for a miss and his fifth shot took off another chunk.

I tried one and broke the last piece off the holder. 5 for 6 hits on pieces of a clay pigeon at 197 yards with peeps. I'm pretty happy with it so far. I might scope it for our long range matches or play at the local BR matches with a higher magnification Japanese Tasco on it but for now I think I'll leave it alone and have fun with the peeps.

I may shoot it tomorrow if I have time thru my match at targets I can see just to see how it'll do.

Anyway, looking forward to a few more shooters tomorrow if it don't rain. Seems to finally getting a bit of interest for those not skeered to try hitting the longer range steel.

Before I forget, I usually try to have something fun for my last stage. This year I have a section of a oxygen bottle that rings like a bell at 195 yards. I told the shooter to get lined up the best they could on it, at the buzzer they had to wait 10 seconds till the second buzzer before they could shoot. It kinda surprised them when I dropped a shield down in front of their scope to block the target while they waited for the second buzzer.

The seasoned shooters had no problem putting impressive groups on the target and hearing the loud "ding" with a hit. Their last shot could either be at the same gong or a clay pigeon for five points. Quite a few had all gong hits and even the clay pigeon. Really easy if you set up for a shot correctly but the bag squeezers struggled a bit. Good practice to learn to do it the same every time and a few had their eyes opened a bit on how important little things like this are and how much better it can make you shoot.

Think I have a good assortment of targets at the right distances this month. Lots of hits to keep it fun but a few tough ones to separate the top shooters for the win. Mother Nature is always in charge but we're getting better at learning her tricks and outsmarting her. Still can't beat ammo that just drops low though. Hate those center hits then one that drops 2 or 3 inches for no reason.

I still haven't learned, I shot the Exemplar Pistol again this month against the rifle guys. I'm a gluten for punishment but having a blast learning to make it perform and it's getting better with each change. I use Wolf MT in it and had 4 dropped rounds, running center hits then they would drop and with my typical luck it was on a smaller higher value target at the end of a rack. Might try a brick of the next level up but still under my limit of $8.00/50 box of ammo to see if it helps any.
