Dasher varmint barrel- 14 or 12 twist

Looking at another barrel for my dasher varmint rig. Ive been using an old 8 twist but sometimes the light bullets seem to do funny things at longer range with it plus I want something a little longer than 21 inches.

The rifle will be used exclusively with 55 and 70gr bullets. I have plenty of other barrels that can shoot 87's if I want.

Just checking if the 70gr nosler BT's and sierra blitzkings will stabilise with a 14 twist or if they will be best stabilised with a 12.

Thanks

The 70 Noslers and Blitzkings stabilize fine in my 14 twist BR, only has a 19" barrel also, you'll be fine with a 1-14 though a 1-13 or 12 lets you run the 75 vmax.

What are real world velocities with the 1/14 twist light bullets for the 6BR? How long does the barrel need to reach your best speeds??

I think around the 3600fps mark with 55gr bullets would be about right. Not pushing them too hard but still similar in performance to a 22-250 with 55gr bullets. Better barrel life and a more inherently accurate cartridge.

I bumped an old 21" long 14" twist 6br barrel to a Dasher for fireforming and shot a lot of 58 Z max through it. 3750fps was attainable with H322, 8208 and 335. I only tried imr 4198, 8208, H322 and H335. 322 was a little faster than the others but I never really pushed anything. Some of those powders run into space problems before pressure problems.

Whoops- Just realized you asked about real world BR velocities...

My real world velocities are 3220 with 68g Barts, the Noslers and Sierra 70s were right at 3200, mind you though this is a 700 action, 19" barrel and very mild loads.
I could probably get up to 3300 easily but the gun shoots real nice where it is so I'm not planning on running it any hotter.

I know that the 14 twist would work.......

I shot a lot of p. dogs and jack rabbits with the 6 BR. Here is my results:

old 21" BR barrel, 14 twist
32.0g+ of H335 with a 60g Sierra
3550fps
Accuracy in the low 2's

?g of H335 with the 70g Hornady SX
3150 fps
accuracy was stellar, but dogs just fell over at 300 yds...no fun in this load

Sold the barrel to a guy that just shoots 100yd informal target shooting

Put on a new 27" Lilja, 1-12 twist

Currently, 55g Noslers
AA2230
3930 fps
1 " groups at 300 yards common

65g V Max
33g of AA2230
3700f ps
Very tiny groups

70g Noslers
? load of AA2230
3550 fps
3 /8"-1/2" groups at 200 yards
Use the same load for the 75g V max bullets

55g Noslers shoot smaller groups consistently out to 400 yards than any of the other bullets.

For live varmints, you need speed at the longer ranges to get the bullets to open up. Sierra Blitz kings seem to be more explosive than the other bullets, and accuracy a tad better.

The BC of the 55g Nosler is unreal.

I have been shooting Wild cats for a long time, and the AA2230 in the 6 BR has blown my mind in terms of accuracy with speed.

Keith,
I'm really surprised that the usual suspects that "own" this group didn't chime in when you stated how accurate your loads were. I guess some of them don't do so good with their super custom actions. I made a statement about the accuracy of one of my Remingtons that has had pretty much everything you can do to make it more accurate including Krieger barrels and you would have thought that I had said disparaging remarks about their grandmother.
I get similar results as we have discussed in the past except that I use a faster 10 twist and would prefer a 9 twist. I have also switched over to AA2520 from AA2460, AA2230 and H-335. My 55gr SBK load goes a little less than 3900 fps and shoots the lights out. I have to vibrate the case before pulling away from the powder measure and only have the bullet seated .080". This weekend I'm going to try some 87 VMax Hornadys with 203B which is kind of a new powder for me even though it is allot like RL-15. It sure works good in the 7mm08 and the 6.5 x 47.

Look forward to hearing your results with the 87's! Anyone that reads my post and tries it will be flabbergasted at the accuracy. I have a panda with multiple barrels, and this trued up 722 never quits amazing me with it's 12 twist lilja MHV barrel that is 27" long.
