dasher shooters

what do you fellas think about fireforming dasher cases in a criterion barrel/ 272/ no turn nk. using old type brass & 107gr. smk/ 450cci mag primers& 29.5 to30gr of varget with 4th. nk. tension& bullet in rifling 20th. or so / and i use redding bushing type dies i know because of the difference in shoulder angle im going to have to get a die to kick back shoulder and size case /i have formed lots of 6mmbrx cases using 30.5 gr. of varget & 107smk well into rifling &4th. nk tension just wondering if it would do just as well in dasher /thanks for any help or comments on this regards shooter63

The charge may be a little low,30.5 is what i use. The use of a Mag. primer would not be advised, the cup is too hard and it will drive the case forward. False shoulder would be better. clean and dry cases and chamber. ..... jim

I just had 50 cases formed by the Hornady hydraulic dies by someone on this forum kind enough to do it for me before I invested in the hydraulic die. It would seem to me that at a time when primers, powder and bullets are at an absolute premium and barrels so expensive that unless you are fireforming while shooting a match, the hydraulic die is the way to go.
Right now there is an article about the process on this site.

There has been several threads on this through out the last few years and on most threads there have been more negatives then positives, cases not long enough, early case head separation just to name a few off memory, A new barrel needs at least 60 to 100 rounds through it before it is really match ready anyway in many people's opinions so you can get a feel for the rifle, get the barrel seasoned and ff your brass while doing it and usually the groups are quite good so practice your wind reading skills while doing it.

Shooter63,
I agree follow Jim's advice he has done a lot of research and trial and error experimints with the dasher and I think he has it down pat, I personally like using Varget, 105 fb speer bullets (they grip the bullet better then bt bullets) and 205 primers and between 30.5 and 31.0 grains of Varget, I false shoulder and Jam.

I'm on vacation enjoying my new grandson and I don't remember the measurement so it will be a while before I can respond.
I'm a novice with the Dasher so I will let others respond on what it should be and there is a thread on the , blow length, right now. It seems that no two people agree on this and I find that puzzling since the Dasher has been around awhile.

How short do you think the length will be out of that die? If i didn't have the set up i use now i would go for a fire form reamer. No turn neck. 1.555 long, that way you don't need the false shoulder, the case would butt up against the end of the chamber. finish the chamber with 120 grit paper. see how long they are and and make a reamer .015 longer and what ever neck did. you want. that would save a lot of work and lot problems. That would save a lot of banging on a die, bending the rod. 400 smacks with a hammer per box?..... jim

My hydro formed cases with blue box are only 1.535. Rifle was used and I got 100 rounds with it that were false shoulder formed and are the same length. I hydro formed them long so I get a crush fit like an ackley on the first firing. I'm new to the dasher and don't really have any business giving advice. If I had a new barrel I would have fired formed them however Jim advised me to do.

I rigged up a mini Pyle driver to hit the stem on the hydro die because I couldn't hit it without bending the stem. It's a pain any way you go about it and I'm thinking a straight BR might be back in my future.

Joe McNeil's cases came out 1.544 in length formed to 2 thou under a PTG go gauge.

odd that i know that...
Well if his die is getting repeatable results at those lengths that is good, I have not seen that though.

You don't want to use the CCI 450 magnum primers on your fire-forming loads. The CCI 450's have very hard primer cups and are tougher to ignite than a Fed 205M. On fire-forming loads you want the cases head to stay firmly planted against your bolts face nd this is easier to accomplish with a softer primer. The firing pin strike will tend to push your cases forward so you want to use the softest primers possible so this won't happen.

The biggest mistake most new Dasher shooters make when prepping there brass is not getting enough crush on the false shoulder. If you can close your gun easily without palming the bolt you don't have enough crush on your false shoulders.

Richard Schatz better known as Mr Dasher just loads them up and pulls the trigger without any false shoulder. His accomplishments in the shooting world are widely known so don't take this relatively easy step and over complicate it. After two firings simply trim to your cases to a uniform length and go shooting. Practicing is far more important than your case finish length, so just keep them uniform and go shooting."
