dasher neck tension

Just out of curiousity how much neck tension are you fellas using on your dasher loads with the heavy bullets? Lee

Just enough to hold the bullet in the case. Then I seat them .020 long and let the bbl and bolt final seat the bullet.

Works for me with a BRX.

using .267 bushing for a loaded .269 non-turned neck. tension is about a thou.

I'll be buying a 266 and 265 bushing in the near future. It's a varmint rig, so I'd like to go up on the tension a bit. Would prefer about 3 thou.

My loaded rounds come out .2695", and I use a 0.268" bushing for freshly annealed necks, and a 0.267" for necks that have been resized a few times. This keeps the stretch and hence tension approximately the same as they get springier due to work hardening.

really i was just curious. I use a .268 bushing and i have found no need to change thus far. I seat my bullets to a nice firm fit in the lands. Lee

Thanks Lynn, good read!! Do you think it is ok to turn .001 off my new brass even though my chamber is a no turn .272? Lee

If your end goal is the most accurate loads you can work up, it's worth taking a shallow cut off new brass necks if only to make as uniform as possible the neck wall thickness around the full neck circumference.

Even with "no-turn" chambers, having brass that's got consistent neck tension is worth achieving. You may not have to take off .001", it's enough to adjust your neck turner to cut 50% - 66% of the neck surface.

Taking a cut off the entire neck may be worthwhile if your choice of case brand is particularly uneven in neck wall thickness. At least then you know what you're dealing with.
