Dasher load development

At what stage (round count) do you believe its ok to start load development in a 6 dasher. I ran a new barrel in today and it showed no copper after a 5 shot group with only 12 shots down it. I figure there is no point shooting then cleaning anymore if it will do that. Now I have a fireforming barrel so wont bother running too many more down it and wearing it out fireforming cases.

Is it right to start shooting and load work straight up or is it better doing it after a couple of hundred shots after the barrel has fully worn in?

Start now>>>BUT expect an increase in velocity as you hit "somewhere around" 100 rounds.. It may appear like your e.s.'s are excessive.... But once you get past say 150 rounds>>>all that will stabilize as the barrel will begin to "quit speeding up" as it were...

I have had them go as high as 100f.p.s.>>>generally 40 or so is normal.. My 6.5 x 47 barrel that is on my rifle now, got right at 80f.p.s. So it will vary. But it will soon settle down.

Thank you, yes I knew it would speed up around 100 shots into its life but wasnt sure whether to bother doing it with only 12 shots down the tube. Quite impressed so far how quick it ran in and shot a 5 shot group after only 7 shots before it and still had no copper fouling beyond what I would expect normal and alot less than some of my other barrels.

The barrels of late, from either Bartlein, Brux or Krieger, come so slick that I have had one "break in" with NO COPPER FOULING from shot 1! I have had them be as difficult as to clean up nicely at shot 4... It used to be that I spent ALL day at the range breaking in a barrel! The barrels now-a-days are excellent! I bet yours will shoot very well indeed!! Keep us posted ok...

I dont know, my 7mm krieger 5R is a copper mine... tempting to sell it to Rio Tinto for a pretty penny. Had to use sweets 7.62 to get the copper out (dont like using that stuff on stainless barrels) then scrub carbon with iosso. From that it looked very smooth but it seems to still like picking up copper. Ive gone to moly to try and get more than 5 shots before it fouls up and wont shoot. As an f class barrel its the worst Ive had yet. Had 223 and 308 and 22BR barrels all krieger and none of them really set the world on fire. I do have one 6.5mm Aussie made barrel that is a genuine hummer and shoots very small groups at long range.

If this 6mm krieger is hard to get shooting, Im ditching them full stop. But things do look promising. To run it in, I borescoped it, saw the reamer marks on the leade and polished them out with autosol polish. Then fired the first shot after a damp patch of G96, borescoped it, saw no copper, pushed another damp patch of G96, saw no copper, pushed another of G96 shot two- no copper, pushed another G96 shot three- no copper, pushed one more of G96 and shot 5- only a slight bit up near the crown which hoppes removed very fast. If hoppes removes copper fast it tells me its not very thick fouling!

If the wind stops blowing here Im going to do an OCW test this week on it. The barrel will be use for 300-500m F class and also 1000ydBR so it needs to shoot small groups.

You are going to L-O-V-E a Dasher for 300-500 F-Open shooting. You should just stack the bullets on top of each other in the "X" ring! My "prediction": Once you have a GREAT load, you will be blowing A LOT of bullet placement markers out on the target! My "best" at 600 yards is 6 markers in one 20 shot string!! LOL!!!

Haha only if this wind dies down. We shot 1000ydBR on the weekend here in 50km/hr gusting front fishtail wind. Smallest group was 240mm and 300WSM heavy guns were blown clean off target at times. But the dasher is a great 300-500m f class gun. Low recoil, accurate and easy to tune (well the last barrel was anyway)

I told ya brad, if it doesn't shoot. I'll take it and make it shoot mate :) I love Kreiger. That's why I have another two on order.....

Ben,
The trick is not to blow the spindles out! The call "target repair on target x" is not something I want to hear in the middle of a string. ;)

Hi Larry! I know EXACTLY what you are saying! The VERY FIRST 600 yard F-Open competition I ever shot, I was on the same target as Mark Walker and pulling for him.. He shot 17 "X's" in the first 18 shots, then blew a 9 and then a 10! I believe I "fixed" the target 3 times! I hope Mark did not hold me accountable for taking a long time to repair his target>>> Just joking>>he is an excellent individual! But it is true, you can eat up a lot of valuable time and will most certainly cause you to end up shooting in a different wind condition or wait further for it to track back! Hehehehe>>But I do love blasting the "X" out whenever I can!

Larry, its an honor to have someone so well accomplished in the sport of F class shooting to reply. Yes I believe it will be very good for 300-500 meters here. Sadly our days of blowing spotters out is gone (was rather good fun) as we now shoot almost exclusively on electronic targets. When can we expect your shooting presence down here in Aus?

Here is a photo of a group shot with 30.6-31.8gr H4895 and 105 hybrids yesterday. Excuse a buddy shooting his 223 next to me. I was only really watching for pressure signs to know what to load for an OCW test tomorrow. I believe this barrel is looking quite good for only 60 rounds old.
