dasher fireforming

I remember how well my 20 VT shot when fire forming shoulders from 221 FB brass.

Maybe we're onto something here? Bunch of guys are probably gonna start showing up at shoots with un formed brass :)

On a neck-turning note:
- I strongly advise to neck-turn before fire-forming, to eliminate any donut possibilities, by blowing it into the shoulder when formed.

Donovan

This is why I think out loud and act slowly......

I will make the necessary changes.

Thanks Donovan,

Phil.

Turn them to fit but not final clearance first. Then turn to final thickness after they are fully formed. It will require you acquire tooling that can size the entire neck length to do correctly. This should give you great brass. On the pistol powder thing, I know some great shooters that do it, but I went back to bullets. I feel the brass consistency is better.

Tom

Do you turn down onto the shoulder at first? Or do you only turn the neck? I ask because once formed, a portion of the shoulder ends up in the neck anyhow. Thanks.

On minimum turns, I go past the eventual neck shoulder junction, not as far as Donovan, but it don't hurt. On tight necks I turn to create headspace on the step, than turn after form. Then one last turn to final.

Tom

How far past eventual shoulder junction? The same as what your 40 degree cutter delivers?

Brandon,

I turn about .250" down, and that turner stays set. The final turn is a separate tool and stays set also. I don't use the stop on the final turn, I just feel/see the cutter shine the shoulder junction. I suppose it's because I'm not quite ready to trim them yet, hoping for them to grow once more.

Tom

I see. Guess I might pick up another turner. Thanks Tom

I used the same setup to form acklys 5 or 6 years ago,i made two to use in a stevens 311 double.I have 2 now for my dasher,I use 18 grains of titwad and I seal it with gulfwax,I just push the neck into the wax and pull out this also offers some pressure buildup and makes the shoulders nice and sharp

How easy does the gulf wax come out of the bore? Any special cleaning methods needed to remove it or will standard bore solvent do the trick? Thanks
