dasher fireforming

Are you better to have a separate rig for fireforming or just use the gun your going to shoot in competition? I was thinking about getting a savage and just switching barrels back and forth that way i will have a hunting rig also can buy the savage axis for about $300 new i can get a blank barrel for about $100 to use as the fireform barrel. I always buy my own reamers

My gunsmith made me a dasher insert for my 12 ga. shotgun using a small amount of titewad powder I get same results as my water forming with no bullet and very simple and fast. DW

You can use the fireforming rounds to run in a barrel, and even for club use they are fine. I was shooting fireforming loads yesterday with 105 nosler and 107 sierras and they were shooting very well- as good as any other gun on the line in fact. But after the barrel is run in and loads found you might not want to do anymore fireforming in it. In that case get a second hand barrel off a benchrest shooter or a cheap barrel like a green mountain chambered up so you can swap barrels around for fireforming.

Hurry back now and give us an explanation. of that rig. I suppose he just mimicked a 12 ga round and used your reamer in the center, just like they make other 12 ga adapters, but we need details! I would love to make one. Thanks

A separate rig is nice.... you may have finally found a use for a savage

Tom

dang, maybe I should have kept a couple in the safe instead of selling them all :)

It is made like a shotgun shell cut with my reamer just primer and i use 15 gr. of titewad start low and work up hold up straight and fire gunsmith fits to your single shot shotgun and uses your reamer .GUNSMITH I USE is BOB LAWSON 4179620439 mine works good . If I can help call DW 4172520927

Dont have a single shot. I have a pump and an auto-loader. I wouldn't even think of trying it in my auto-loader, but can the adapter be ejected like a shell from a pump?

I know you guys all know and are talking about pistol powder with no bullet, but remember shotgun breeches are not designed to handle 60k psi just in case anyone got the idea to load a bullet. ;)

It might be hard to keep the powder in the case with a pump. Probably a lot easier with a single shot. Tom does Savage still make a single shotgun. Matt

Not worried about keeping powder in the case. Just use tissue or wax stuffed in the neck.

I coached a fellow named Elliot from Duluth MN while using my no-turn Dasher (6BR Ubl) in a 1000yd team match while fire-forming cases that were set up on a false shoulder. Using iron sights, he fired his only 200 score in his life at 1000yds. He eventually bought that rifle and is looking for 200 number 2.

Moral of story: Fire-forming a Dasher will likely shoot better than you can. Just shoot them in a match....

In the process of putting together a fire forming rifle for my Dashers.....plural.

I`m going to use used parts and a .272 neck zero free bore to shoot 55gr. bullets at unsuspecting squirrels to fire form my cases.

I will be able to load and fire without having to neck turn, then after forming I will neck size and turn to chamber dimensions.

I think it is a master plan,unless I have forgotten something :o

I like that master plan. Might have to get a .272 no turn and 0 fb reamer to suit next barrel. 35gr of benchmark behind a 55gr nosler BT is rather devastating on small furry things.

I'll second this. I nearly freaked out when my first load work-up shots were worse than the casual groups I shot when fireforming!

I'd say that they're enough to take a club match if you use Hybrids or 108BTs.

And yeah, more about this 12ga insert....pics?

(Funny how any new way of FF gets us all to go.................. Squirrel!)

Me too - I'd like to see the 12G method as well.

But as mentioned above, fireforming loads can be very accurate, I fire formed 100 Dasher cases of two 300m comps, 30g Varget 107 SMK 30th Jam, and 205 primers, i won the first match, shot very well, and as someone mentioned above, they shot better then latter stuff i worked up ! :-[ :-[ :-[
