Dasher/BRX bbl life with heavy bullets.

Was recently talking to two different shooters with experience shooting the Dasher and the BRX. Both said that (after two bbls each) they are getting around 2000-2200 rounds out of a bbl.

Both of these shooters are NRA HP Long Range competitors. The barrels in question ranged from cut rifle to button rifled. Didn't seem to make any difference in the number of accurate rounds.

The shooters were using RL15 and Varget behind 107 SMKs and 105 Bergers.

When these cartridges were new on the market people were making claims for 3500 rds of accurate bbl life. Perhaps that was for light bullets and short range shooting. Maybe these four bbls were the exception instead of the rule for accurate round count. Not sure.

What say you?

When my smith bore scoped my brx and my 6 xc at 1500 rounds , he said the brx maybe had 500 before she was gone, and the 6xc had a 1000 more .......
needless to say, I am sticking to the 6xc. For reference both had 3 groove 8 twist pac nors . BRX was cronoed at 2950 , 6 XC at 3100 . I hate to say it, but I think most riflemen are like sheep. If some one took nationals with a 6 mm 30 - 40 craig wildcat , the next year half of the shooters would have one . Records would be set with it , not because it was the best, but because the best use it . Every one with a dasher, br , brx , or any other variant, feel free to call me a douche .

I think most barrel failure is due to improper cleaning or lack of it. I watch people clean and the rod looks like a saw cutting a board, with no thought of keeping it straight. They never clean the rod off or and use the bore guide with no insert. I am setting back the the barrel i got from Donovan for the third time it has so many rounds out of i quit counting but can still shoot a 4" 10 shot group at 1K. I use RL-15 33+ grs. and cci 450's so they are not light loads but i don't wear the barrel out cleaning, if i use a brush it only goes one way and i get the carbon out with Warthog 1134 never seen to much or any copper...... jim PS. thanks,Donovan..... it's a hummer

My dasher has changed very little change in 1200 rounds. just checked it new it was 1.825 1200 rounds 1.829. I never have used anything but H 4350. Good Shooting Larry

johara1 hit it on the head. Barrels die more from improper cleaning than shooting. I have retired one 6BRX barrel. I got it with 400 rounds on it. I had to have the chamber end cut off and redone to fit my action. It was chambered to 6BR for 1000 rounds, then opened to 6BRX for 2000 rds, for a total of 3400 round. I shot the IBS 600 yds LG record 0.749" in 2007' with over 2000 rds on the barrel. It all depends on how barrels are shot and cleaned. If you shoot them hot they want last as long.

Mark, My record last year was done with a 3000 rd. barrel and was just set back 2" for an other action and will be used again....... jim

Tom, i don't chase the lands, at the end of the year set them back. I have had great success like that. I shoot both 5-10 shots strings, speed wise i goes fast as the condition lets me. I am learning to save on sighters... jim

Thanks for the great information guys. I really planned/expected that my dasher would last 1k rounds, looks like I need to buy some more bullets ;D

Once you have it set up with a combination that works, don't waist the barrel. i did that with a hummer and i regret ever since. Always buy enough bullets, powder and primers of the same lot to wear out the barrel...... jim

Retired my Brx barrel at around 3k rounds. It was still shooting good but was running out of case when seating bullets.

What length barrel are you starting with and how short do you get before you start with a new one?

I shoot a BRX at both groundhog matches to 500 yds and at 1000 yd BR matches. I have just over 2000 rounds on this barrel,1-8 4 groove Bartline, and it is shooting great. I shoot 107 SMK's. Did some tuning at 200 yd several nights ago and shot back to back 3 shot groups that measure .111 and .162. I had another BRX shooter tell me has has one still shooting well at 3000 rounds. I hope mine does the same, I would rather buy bullets and powder and shoot than replace barrels.I have chased the throat about .004 but my dies move with little effort.

About 2500 rounds on average with my BRX in F-class. This is a little better than my 243 WIN. Having used a few 6mm cartridges now, they all are hard on barrels compared to the larger calibers. I'm still amazed when I borescope my 308 WIN and it looks like brand new after 1K, 2K, 3K rounds.
