Dasher at short range?

I guess you are talking about bench rest at 300yds, (which I have never shot). I shoot 60 shots at 300yd (f Class ) and I"ve maybe seen 1 ppc on the line in 8 yrs. I think we are comparing different games.

I was wondering if you thought the same, if shooting at a 300yd F Class match of 60 shots. I have never shot bench rest, and only shoot prone F Class. I have never seen a ppc on the 300yd line. If you think a ppc would out shoot a 6br in that enviroment, I would have to try the ppc.

Ive never shot a 300yd f class match but id sure give the ppc a try if i did. I sometimes shoot a 40 shot 200/300yd match for score similar to f class without spotting/target dropping and a 1" x ring at 300 and me and my father are the only ones to ever shoot a perfect score- 400-40x and we did that off a wooden bench with a LV ppc usually every match. If not 40 it was 35+. No other caliber has ever hit 400. It really helps me to be able to see my shots so 300 is cool with me.

If you plan to shoot the 105 bullets at 300 yds. in a Dasher or BR. i think you would have the edge, if you are tuned properly. If the wind is blowing it's a no brainer…… a PPC. will not push the 105 fast enough to be effective and many have tried….. jim

I think Jim is correct about the (wind edge). I made the mistake of shooting 80gr fb at a semi windy 300yd match, after that failed string, I went to 105 VLDs and cleaned the other 2 strings. On a non mirage day I also see my hits at 300, to be successful.. its a must if no puller or spotter is used. Dusty that 400/40x is impressive at a 1" X. Many times 300 Fclass matches are decided on X count, in low wind conditions.

If you get a good one and tune your loads well you can shoot in the 1s and 0s at 100 yds shooting 107s. And I do well against 6brs at short range and if you do 600 and 1000 you will like the dasher. You can get your brass hydro formed and start shooting. Good luck with whichever one you do

Original poster.... I've shot against John's dasher on a lot of occasions. It flat out will shoot, as are some of the other dashers I compete against. If you want one rifle to compete in the shorter ranges and a couple of long range matches, the dasher with a 103 to 108gr bullet properly tuned is a tough customer to beat. And if you're not great at reading wind flags it can save your bacon on a given relay. JME. WD

We shoot a local monthly 300m( score and group ) match, on a day with great conditions, the 6ppcs win hands down. a 30 BR in the same conditions did well, but when the conditions are very switchy ( most of the year ) the Dashers figure at the top most of the time

Speaking of small groups, check out Gary Ocock's 0.149 300 yard, five shot group shot with a 6PPC and 68gr. BT bullets in a registered match. This group is pictured on page 350 of Mike Ratigans book, "Extreme Rifle Accuracy". The 6 PPC will prevail if the conditions are not too tough. However, the 105 VLD's at a decent velocity will prevail in the windy conditions. The late Ferris Pindell once told me that if he were shooting today, he would opt for a 105 VLD in the 6 BR case for 200 yards. This is from the father of the PPC. Ferris did not compete with 6BR however and this may have been just speculation. Well that is both sides of the argument and if I had to say which I would use, I will say ....both. James

Dusty your a good smith and a good shooter but your memory is terrible.lol :D

Richard McClain holds the range record with 400 29x with a 6br and 108 Bergers

Dusty Stevens 400 24x with I would assume your 6ppc

JJ Hurley 400 23x with a Dasher or 6.5x47 (not sure)...this past weekend actually...she did great!

and a notable mention...

Kevin Shepard 399 36x with a Dasher and 105JLK's....that one is a killer lol.

My memory may not be any better than yours, so if I got those scores wrong I apologize and stand corrected. :(

As a side note...I know the scores don't sound that great but,,,your basically shooting blind for 20 shot strings most of the time...due to mirage and no pits it is a hold and hope type deal.

Well what do you think is a better round for a dedicated 300 yard SCORE rifle, a Dasher or a 6BR? Face it at 300 an X is a gift. Just want to stay in the 10 ring. I just think that the 30BR at 300 is marginal. I just had Brux send Sid Goodling a 7.75 twist blank. Which caliber would u choose? PS: I bought a 24" Hawk Hill barrel from a friend that he chambered in 6x47L with a 9tw that I will be trying at the same distance.

Jim:
i shoot up in Washington state, Kenmore Gunrange: last few months we shoot Score matches at 300 yards only, I shoot against some amazing shooters:

a: one shooter : always 6PPC , he will and and can beat anyone at 300 yards: but he is probably the most GIFTED wind reading shootr: heck, he makes Wind Flags for a living: heck, all of us use use his windflags

b: another shooter:(my mentor): shoots a 30 BR: he is nearly 80 yo: and when he is on, he is VERY hard to beat.
I think you are right in that the dasher and 6BR have the BC advantage and easier to drive the bullets down range.
But from my observation: all three calibers: 6PPC, 30 BR, 6BR(or dasher) can all win at 300 yards. But Personally for X-counts at 300 yard, I would bet on a 30BR to win if the shooter is capable of driving this beast downrange in a 13.5 lb gun
