DAAG or DAG 156 Colloidal Graphite

Looking for info on the use of DAAG or DAG 156 Colloidal Graphite in breaking in a new barrel and the use of Grafoil after breaking in the barrel.

If I remember from when I wrote the first article on these products for Shooter's News, you should clean an unfired barrel to as absolute a state as possible, dry and completely free of oil, wet a patch with the dag and run it up and down the bore, reapplying at the muzzle until the bore thoroughly coated, then allow 45 min. or so for the alcohol base to evaporate and then use some solvent and a few patches to get out the excess. At this point the bore and anything else that came in contact with the stuff should be thoroughly blackened. Take care. Then you can follow your normal break-in procedure,or not. When George Kelbly told me about the stuff a number of years ago at a match, he was shooting a new barrel, sans break-in at the match, with no fouling problem. Out in the sunlight, the bore looked inky black. The other stuff is used a couple of drops on a patch, worked up and down the barrel,Dry the chamber.) after cleaning. Greg Tannel is very knowledgeable on this subject, so you might call GreTan Rifles. Or Kelbly's. It has been a number of years since I wrote the article, so I may be a little rusty on the details. Stan Buchtel used to sell the stuff, but I think that he is no longer doing so. Check with Greg for a source.

I know this is an old thread, but has anyone had luck with this stuff, and if so,please elaborate on the long term benefits.

I was also turned on to colloidal graphite by George Kelby. The dates on my bottles are 2007 and I use it on every barrel after cleaning as well as the break in period. After dozens of barrels in a multitude of calibers, I can say with at least a little authority that this stuff works! You can purchase both varieties from Greg Tannel, Gre'tan rifles.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

Thanks 1shot. I just applied it, according to Greg's instructions, as I was breaking in my new build. I'm just curious as to it's long term benifits. That's good news! So your first shot from a cold, clean bore continues to be nearly zeroed? Does it improve ES or SD in your velocities, as far as you see?

I can't answer the question as to long term benefits as I haven't shot a new bbl. without it since 2007. I seriously doubt it would have any measurable effect on throat wear, but that's just a presumption. The cold bore shot is significantly closer to the remaining shots, and the velocity reduction is less as proved my both the target and my chronograph.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd
