D.R.Greenlaw Front Rest...

After many, many, years shooting off of a Cowan Rest, I just ordered one of these:http://drgreenlawmachining.com/

Dan is an excellent guy to deal with. He is very willing to modify it to suit your own personal needs and tastes. Does anyone have any input as to a modification that might make one handier? I’m ordering the one with adjustable windage top and 3M bags. I thought about having him make the Mariner wheels a bit longer and the base plate a bit thicker for more weight but don’t know if it’s necessary?

Anybody have any suggestions while I still have time?

Ask Dan.

I have found him knowledgeable, and helpful.

Thanks, I have spoken to Dan about it. Obviously he makes it the way he makes it because he has found the design good as is - which I’m sure it is or I wouldn’t be buying one.

What I’m looking for is input from those that have one and found something they wish they’d done differently or that would have been more useful if they had it to do over again.

For instance when I bought my Cowan I later added the speed screws and mariner wheels when they became available.

Myself have shied away from the "super slick" 3M material bags, after having them.
Inconsistent slickness being the reason (went back to cordura bags).

As to weight of a rest, my own opinion is: they should weigh near or more then the rifle(s).

I appreciate the feedback. I’ve been going back and forth on the 3M stuff and actually had some misgivings so thanks to you, I think I’ll go back to the original plan and stick with the Cordura.

As far as weight goes however, I believe most quality rests will fit that description no?

There’s isn’t much difference in a basic triangle rest with a windage top

I wish I had gotten knurled knobs.
I had Dan put two groves in the base and sent him 2 bubble levels, he installed in a T on the base, works great to keep every thing level.
Level replacement bubbles from McMaster-Carr couple bucks each, I bought a few extra for leveling scopes.

I actually asked him about that cause I wanted them too. They all come with Knurled knobs now. He stopped making the plastic ones. The pic on the website is old.

I also emailed him asking about levels on the rest. Great minds do think alike... :D

That’s a friggin great idea, thanks!

Well as I said, it’s a basic triangle design. Works fine ya just have to reach for the windage controller.
maybe one day I’ll put a coaxial type top on it.

For the most part, likely so.

One thing about Dan's being a solid plate base (instead of wishbone style) it has more to room for expansion (weight, cradles, etc..).
I really his rest and tops (even though I do not have one). And there more affordable then many !.!.!

I was introduced to them at a match last week. Two of the competitors are using them and I was really impressed - especially for the price! Plus he is a super nice guy, and easy to deal with, which goes a long way with me.

I haven’t been this excited about something I’ve purchased in a long time. Can’t wait to get it...

If you already own a Cowan rest with a mariners wheel and a speed screw, you may find as I say not a lot of difference in a triangle design with a windage top that moves horizontally.
Mine has a wide stance and the weight I was looking for, the bling is a bonus. PT&G offers a reasonably priced 3/8x16 speed screw btw

There are certain things that I do prefer about the Greenlaw over the Cowan. As I said, there are two people at the matches I attend who have them. They are both nice but there are definite differences. For one, the Greenlaw can be made to my specs so if I want something different I have the option. Also, I don’t even know if I’ll sell the Cowan yet because I’ve had it so long there is some sentimental value there. Plus I have two different tops for it and a lot invested in it that I probably wouldn’t get back so I may just keep it as an extra.

As for the speed screw, now I’m wondering if the one on the Cowan will fit the Greenlaw...

Is the Greenlaw 3/8-16?
