CZ550 Magnum Receiver

I have one of these in 55* and 60*. It allows you to get the centerline of threading point parallel with the shank of the tool, even though the point is offset. Heres a picture of the 60* tool. You gotta have a magnifier or good eyes to see the fit and get the thread cutting geometry correct. Greg

Have been away from the site for awhile and do have a comment if you want a long range elk rifle The action details you and others are discussing are way above my pay grade. However, I have hunted a lot in the last 64yrs for every type game using everything from a .22short to a .577 double.
My favorite all time long range elk and medium game rifle is a custom .338RUM. It is built on a Win. 70 controlled feed action with a 26" Krieger barrel. Shoots 250 gr. bullets at 2986fps with 3 shot groups of 5/8" at 200 yds. This combo has been used for close to 15 yrs. with spectacular results. As you will note there is very little difference between this and a Lapua round. There is no way you or the game could tell a bit of difference in the field. Just thought I would add my two cents on the caliber. Bill

WBoggs, Got your PM and note your thoughts and experience! Yes! The .338RUM is a formidable performer! Thanks for your input! The dust hasnt settled, yet :o :D! Still lookin under rocks and in crevices ;D! Have input on a Montana Rifle Company Professional Hunter receiver. I do like Lapua Brass! GregH

If you haven't been to the bjgbore forum on www.accuratereloading.com. Quite a bit of info on the MRC big bore receiver.

I think you have found you action. The MRC Double Square Bridge Magnum Mauser is modeled after the legendary Mauser and that was the finest money could buy. I don't see how they can manufacture them at that price but they are. I've seen a couple of them on rifles in Africa in .416 Rigby and an experimental .450 Rigby. Both were owned by Mr. Roberts, an owner of Rigby in London. He used to come to hunt with a PH friend of mine in Tanzania.
If I were building a rifle today for hunting dangerous game in large calibers, this would be the action. You can barrel for your choice of calibers.
Keep us informed on your progress.

butchlambert, I have registered and am awaiting approval to become a member of accuratereloading.com. Lots of GOOD STUFF there! Thanks for the link.

WBoggs, You're rubbin' shoulders with some "high powered" folks ;D! That action you mentioned is the "Professional Hunter" . It looks like a good one. Butchlambert, referred me to the above web site. There is some discussion of it there.

I went to the web site before I posted to you. I have hunted with some of the best in Africa and have lots of stories. I am getting up in years but still have a good buffalo hunt or two left in me.
For your purposes a .338 Lapua will be a dream come true. If you have never used anything like that, be prepared to be impressed.

Bill, Thanks for the reply! I am retired and want to build a unique rifle for myself and hopefully to pass down to my Son. It will be a heavy rifle but capable of long range accuracy for field use.
Read an article on <accuratereloader> about the production problems and issues that have been a thorn in the side for Montana Rifle Company. It (the Professional Hunter action) looks like a great design. I'd like to see a longer barrel tenon. However, the diameter of the tenon is outstanding at 1.2"
I'd love to kill a Buffalo. However, I would be satisfied with a North American Bison with a .45/70 Sharps Rifle 8) ;D! The Meat is outstanding!
I am not against punching a hole in Mbogo ;), it is just beyond my ability! Best of luck to those that can ;D!
Elk are my favorite quarry and in various terrain. Bear and Mountain Lion are the antagonists. A modern .45/70 rifle with +P loads is more than adequate for all except for the long shots ;).
I've killed Elk with the .300 Savage, .30/06, .30/338 and .45/70. They all have their place. Precise shot placement is the key, as I am sure you know! I hate tracking wounded game. I desire to hit their on/off switch and make them DRT.

The only instantaneous kills are central nervous system hits, brain or spinal cord.
I see you have used mostly .308 bullets. I went to the 250-300gr. .338 bullets and have never looked back. They are a good compromise. But, I've never used a rifle with a muzzle brake.
My goodness, I see you are retired like myself. That will give us plenty of time to chat. My knowledge of technical gunsmithing issues is very limited and not worth much.
My expertise is bullet placement, contruction, etc. There isn't much I have not used or seen used on all the game animals.
One of my passions used to be elk hunting. Bill

Bill, Yep, from the base of the ear down the neck is an ideal shot on an Elk. But thats another story :D!
I'm not a professional gunsmith, although there was a time when I had hoped to be. Greg
