CZ 762x39 carbine to a 6.5 grendel

carl1575

I am still in the car business after 53 years
I have a CZ 7.62x39 I haven't shot in years, I think It would be a fun project to make a 6.5 Grendel out of it. Is there some one on this site that has done it and would like to do it again. Any one interested in the project, just give me a ball park of what it would cost me. I know some one is going to tell me about the one that was shown at the SHOT SHOW this year, I went to Cabalas to see if they had a 223 like the 6.5 Grendel they are building on the same action. They had one, starting price 599.00 down to 349.00. I am here to tell you it aint no CZ. I am sure CZ will have one out in a year or so. I don't want to wait a year or more. When you are 77 a year is a big percentage of the rest of your shooting life. Carl in Yakima

Carl,
I, too, am investigating that caliber change. In my case I have a 527 in .223. For you it is basically a barrel change. For me it is a 7.62x39 bolt, bottom metal and barrel. I rebarreled once from .204 Ruger to .223 using a Douglas XX blank. Chamber/crown generally runs about $250, barrel anywhere from $200-325 depending upon which you choose and how long.

I've done one for a nice little rifle for my daughter...then she turned out to be left eye dominant and it's still sitting on the shelf with the barrel installed and the stockwork halfway completed as I picked up a decent Boyd's replacement in walnut. It's really just a simple re-barrel job. I could do it for you this fall as I'll be gone to some training til early Oct. Metric threads, but that's about the only twist to it.

MSALM that would be good timing for me too. I have a new AR 15 in 6.5 Grendel that is close to being done, they were waiting for one more part to finish it, cant wait I am like a kid hanging around the Christmas tree waiting to open something up. when you think you are ready email me at carlf72@gmail.com or here on our site or call me 509 985 8709 8am-8pm, Sundays 11am-8pm Carl Farnsworth Nothing like a new project to look forward to. Really now that Howa has come out with their mini action that is a slick option too, but they need a better bottom metal IMO. I have one in .223 and tried to shoot a coyote from the porch one night when they were howling below the house. As I shouldered the rifle my left hand slid rearward along the stock and lightly bumped the mag release. A plastic mag dropping 4 feet onto the deck on a still night quickly scattered the coyotes.....

Carl, I'll be home the first week of October, go ahead and PM me and I'll give you my contact info.

Best regards,
Matt

made mine into a 375 grendel.

Spook what is the reason for a 375 Grendel? Is it a rifle to shoot in places like Indiana in shotgun areas?

I have a 527 V 9 twist 223 that has been shot a bunch and doesnt shoot as good as it did about 6,000 rounds ago,,I been thinking about a 6x223AI setup for the Sierra 85 gr Game King BTHP ,,,do you have to do anything extra for the extractor??

if I had a 7.62 I would have it done in 6mm PPC with a 10 twist,,I love the Micro Mauser action and should feed the PPC from the 7.62 mags smooth as silk,,

those actions really smooth up nice after they been shot some,,

Heavy bullets traveling 1060 fps for use with suppressor.

Yea after I posted I noticed the muzzle end threads, and the light went off. I am getting ready to build a 30 BR to shoot suppressed with. I have lots of 220 SMKs for my RUM and thought the BR case would be small enough to shoot subsonic as well as some supersonic loads. Think 30 BR case and 125 grn burgers.

Ive done the grendel case in 30 and it worked exceptionally well, we called it a "30 covert". Cases can be made cheaply from 1x 7.62 x 39.

Did one conversion last year and posted some pics on here of it. Scott at Live Oak Accuracy did a great job on it. That little rifle has become one of my favorites, the others are getting lonely in the safe. Too much fun it is accurate, light weight and plain fun. Scott did a little more than just rebarrel and drop it back in the stock:
Milled out the barrel channel in the stock to get rid of the cutouts for the stock
Turned a 1:8.4 Obermeyer barrel to match new stock dimensions, flute and finish to 22 inches.
Pillar and glass bed stock

It is a fun little shooter and hunting rifle that weighs 7.4lbs scoped and loaded. That works very well on everything I have done with it, targets out to 600 yards so far and hogs to 200lbs.

Scott uses CNC equipment and saves programming for duplication of work if he needs to make another any time.
