Cutting speed (rpm) when case trimming or neck lathing

I was shown how to cool & lubricate my neck turning tool by dunking it in water between cuts. It's worked for me so far.

My little 3.6 volt drill runs at around 150 rpm unloaded.

Are you turning necks on a lathe? If so you can use the method Jackie Schmidt does and then run higher RPM’s. If using neck turning tools then keep it slow and low and lubed.

If you press the case onto a dowel pin or spud in a lathe use a little coolant and run the lathe as fast as you want.

If you are using a hand turning tool the pilot friction in the neck will generate a lot of heat that will cause the tool to expand. Run it much slower, lube the pilot and cool between cases if you need to.

the lathe i used today had 70 rpm as its low speed, so that is what i used.
i mount the cutter in the lathe and hold the case with a tool.
popped a primer pocket reamer in the lathe, and did the pockets also.

Well, when I first started neck turning the mandrel used to get so hot I couldn't hold on to it. I just merrily went along my way. A small bowl filled with crushed ice, ( to dump the cutting tool into) was a prerequisite. Then, along came Accurate Shooter. Sizing brass for minimum neck tension, expander mandrels and the rest is history. A couple of weeks ago I turned 50 pcs. of Peterson 6mm CM brass to 22 CM and never had to stop and let things cool down at all.
