Cutting oil for lathe sump system

carlsbad

Lions don't lose sleep over the opinions of sheep.
Years ago I bought a partial barrel of cutting oil and have been running it in my sumps ever since. I lost the records on what it is. It has been very good to me.

Now the last batch of it is getting dirty. Any recommendations on affordable oil to put in the sump?

I do not like water based fluids.

I bought 5gal of high sulfur dark cutting oil from mcmaster Carr and it’s been good stuff so far. It was around $100 shipped to my door

I use two products from H&B Petroleum in Rockaway Nj. I use their gun drill oil in my barrel flush for reaming, leaves a beautiful finish. I use their Habcool 318 tapping fluid for cutting threads. It is a dark sulfur oil it seems. Their stuff is a little pricey but it has served me well and they are good folks to deal with. habcool.com.

Just to be clear, I'm looking for something in gallons to put in the sump.

Any high-sulfur cutting oil (I have a mix of Ridgid and Oatey, only because they didn't have enough Ridgid at the plumbing supply house)- and I cut 20% with ATF as well.

Why not just use screw machine oil if you need something 'thinner'? Aerokut 77 or Hangsterfers'. Designed as "cutting oil". About the weight of 20wt, so it flows good. Over the 26+yrs I 've been chambering, dark threading oil has always worked well using a flush system, long before flush systems were popular. The only 'additive' I've added is Tap Magic w/EP extra. All designed as "cutting oils". It never occurred to me to add hydraulic oil, like ATF.
