Custom stock making?

Anyone know of any good articles, books, guides or posts on building a custom stock? I am wanting to build a benchrest stock. Im going to do a draft using MDF then go onto either a laminate or solid wood. I was going to try to make one for my old cooey 39 for practice.

Thanks

I would google stock making and see what develops as I know there are books out there on this subject. Also check with brownells and midway,I am almost positive they sell books on the subject and punch the idea into youtube and see what you get.

I have an old book at home I read and re-read.

I bought my cocobolo and laminated it myself. Had it surface sanded on a belt fed sander where I bought it.

Used hand tools and inletted it myself using the old stock as a guide.

Finished and bedded it with Devcon steel filled epoxy.

1. Wish I had a good mill, but broke and no room.

2. Cocobolo is heavy and oily. Had to clean it with toluene. Laminated it with 24 hour epoxy and pressure.

3. NEVER AGAIN. Once was fun, but thats it.

So, my advice. Do it at least once to see if you're having fun yet.

Pick a nice piece of English Walnut and forget about the lamiates, it cuts soooo much nicer! And isn't nearly the "chore" that a laminate is!

On the Accuratereloading forum there is a "sticky" at ther top of the gunsmithing section with lots of pictures. The guy make it "look" easy.

Yes, it is, and it's also potentially toxic to folks who might be allergic to it. Most common hardwoods used for making rifle stocks are reasonably safe to work with (but be aware that some species carry infectious organisms that can ruin your health if they get to growing in your lungs, spalted maple being one such) while most of the exotics carry some risk.

If you have an itch to make yourself a stock and you'd rather not have that itch become something more than a permanent PITA (or elsewhere!!) check out these lists:
