Custom sizing die

I have ordered a custom reamer for an upcoming project and will need a custom sizing die made. My question is, can the sizing die be made accurately from the reamer print or does one need cases that were fire-formed from the cut chamber to be more exact? TIA

My first reaction is to say: Take your question to Lywood Harrell at Harrell's Precision [ http://harrellsprec.com/ ] since they ask for FIREFORMED CASES before assigning a specific die for the calibers they work with. I'm sure Lywood can provide the rationale for his request.

In order to make a custom sizer, you will need another reamer specially made to cut a FL sizing die chamber that matches your chamber reamer. The sizing reamer is going to be smaller in diameter to reduce brass to proper size.

Not sure the caliber, but like mentioned above, Harrells makes semi custom bushing dies for 6mmBR, PPC and Dasher. They measure fired cases and send you a die that will match pretty close.

The last time I asked, Harrell's made dies for other calibers but had not updated their online page. Call to find out what their full inventory includes.

I understand the concept. My question is whether or not it is less accurate to have a die made from a print of my reamer than from a fire-formed case.

My son had ordered two reamers, (284 Shehane)one for chamber, and 1 for sizing, Bob Greene did the chamber and the sizer. He did not need the fired case to do the work and the die has worked very well for 5 new chamber jobs, but I always used the same chamber reamer. I just ordered a new chamber reamer (PTG) kept the same body size with just a throat length change. I expect the die to work well with the new reamer also. So basically my die reamer was made from the print of the chamber reamer.
I would think it could be done both ways with accuracy, but easier grinding both reamers the same time.

Some of the die makers can work off a drawing. I believe JLC can and grinds his dies, not use a reamer. I think Warner can too. Matt

All is well until the chamber reamer does not duplicate what the print says. In a perfect world the finished chamber should be indicative of what the print was , unfortunately that isn't always the case.
It can and has been done , me I would prefer sending in cases after having been fired but sometimes that isn't an option.

Let us know which route you go and your results.

This is the case, more times than not, IMO, I agree with your assessment. When forming a brand new wildcat, a guy runs into the " chicken or the egg" syndrome, hard to know what to do first, but my inclination is to get the brass formed , with dies on hand if possible, and then after chambering, send the fired cases off. Decisions, decisions!

I heard back from my die maker and his feeling is that unless the chamber is over polished so that the size is enlarged, there is no difference between using a reamer print or a fire-formed case.
