Custom sizing die criteria

Have a new barrel on the way and while it's at the smiths I've decided to go with a custom F\L bushing die.

My question is what is the best fired dimension case to send to them, once fired? twice fired , 3x fired and shoulder bumped .001" using a bushing bump neck die? If all else I could call them , just wanted to see if there were varying opinions.

Whidden Gunworks makes custom sizing dies and they require the chamber reamer print or three pieces of fired brass. I went with the chamber print on my custom sizing die order as you simply email a scanned copy to them. Easier than posting fired cases to them from Australia :)

Harrell's prefers 2, which is a source I highly recommend depending on the caliber you're shooting. The 2 you send back, you don't mess with. What comes directly out of the chamber is what they're looking for. Call them to verify any preference they may have developed recently.

When you push shoulders back, Use your FULL LENGTH bushing die. Adjust it to push shoulders back .001" to .0015". It's well up to the task. There's No need for another tool.

Perfect that's what i needed to know , as a
Matter of fact that's who I'm planning on having do the die for me lol.

Just wasn't sure on how many firings were required as I know with certain loads the post firing case dimension vary.

Thanks again!

I understand the question, the barrel and reamer is at 'YOUR' smiths. There was a time when the smith made the reamer that cut the chamber then made the die. You have decided to go with a bushing die meaning the die will not size the case neck, a die can be made with the same reamer used to cut the chamber for sizing the case body and shoulder.

A very cleaver smith could do the bushing.

I would agree if you purchased a rifle and the reamer that cut the chamber was not available.

Bushings are readily available, in various sizes, from a variety of sources, Wilson, Sinclair International, etc, including one, Bud Mundy, who provides Carbide bushing. If interested in Carbide [saves having to lube the outside of the necks], here's Bud's contact info:

Another consideration, own your own reamer [I own two]. For about $138, you'll have the same chamber cut each time you have a gunsmith re-chamber a barrel for you. Reamers are available from many sources too. Here's a source many use: http://www.pacifictoolandgauge.com/ Dave Kiff really knows his profession.

I was under the impression that dies made from the same reamer were not as desirable as using fired brass.... I understand what you're saying , just curious as to why places ask for brass and not the reamer.. Is it simply a matter of the person may not have the reamer available to them and the fired brass is the next best thing?

Just send Harrell's the fired cases, preferably cases that have gotten a little tight. They only make dies for a limited range of chamberings:

http://harrellsprec.com/index.php/products/full-length-die

And a proper FL die CANNOT be made using your chambering reamer. If the case is tight in the chamber, a die cut with that same reamer can't fix it. The FL die maker can use the reamer print to dimension the FL die, though -- the FL die will be smaller at the base and the wall/shoulder junction than the chamber dimensions.

You can not make a sizing die with your chamber reamer that would do you any good. You can make a seater die with your reamer but that is basically it.

They want the fired cases to see how much they need the die to size and allow for the spring back of the brass.

If you do not resize your brass enough (body reduction and shoulder bump) your extraction is going to suck.

Send them cases and enjoy!

Thanks guys , this is more or less what my smith has told me and why I didn't just get him to do it with my reamer... Just wanted to see the who what where and why's of it all .

When the reamer is not available fired cases are used. When fired cases are required the die maker? could simple shorten the die by grinding the base, an option exercised by reloaders, some shortened the deck height of the shell holders, others ground the bottom of the die. It is possible to open the neck of a full length sizer die to turn them into body dies? as in a die that sizes the case body and shoulder without sizing the neck.

When the reamer exist that cut the chamber, it does not get better than using the same reamer to cut the die. I have no clue why using the same reamer is not an option in the world of the Internet, before the Internet it was a common practice. There were other options also, lost in time and the skill, methods and techniques forgotten.

He can make a seating die with your chamber reamer. Give the reamer MFG a call and have him make you a sizer die reamer and you can have any number of smiths make you a sizing die.

For a seater, not a FL size die. This dates before the intardnet...

This is sounding like a better plan maybe...
