Custom reamers and Dies

Im thinking about putting together something a little different like a 6.5x55 Ackley improved or a .243 AI, Im not sure yet but my question is,who can give me a complete package of custom reamers and Dies altogether.Im thinking Pacific Tool and Gauge. Maybe you experienced men can advise me what to do.

Never known Kiff to make dies, but he does make a excellent reamer, and that can be used for the bullet seater if you choose to use a Wilson die.. A few fired cases sent to the sizing die guy of your choosing is your best bet.... Neil Jones---Al Warner do a good job at that... also lots of others I imagine.......

I had PT&G make my reamer based on 6.5x55 necked down and improved. Hornady made my dies from the reamer print. All of the above were great to deal with.

What do I do as regards the dies,I had no idea that I could just call up hornady and place a custom order.Do you have a contact number for that side of there business.
Thanks in advance,great reply.

JGS in Oregon can build your reamers and I think dies. if not dies, then Hornady can and will make custom dies. You can also buy blank dies and have a gunsmith/machinist make your dies. Any good machinist should be able to work from plan specs to make dies from blanks.

I know that 243AI dies, and maybe 6.5 x 55)are available off the shelf so no need for custom work there. An interesting cartridge that I have and use in shooting at 1,000 yards is a .243AI reamer held .130 short for the chamber and a set of .243AI dies with .130 turned off the bottom for sizing and seating. I use 250 Savage brass for fireforming. I am shooting the 105 Berger VLD's at just over 3400 feet per second and ballistics put it inside a 6.5-284 at 1,000 yards. A very efficient little cartridge!

When faced with much the same choice, I ordered a reamer from Dave Kiff at PT&G ground to match standard Redding competition dies. Since the shoulder does need to be bumped on occasion I got the neck only bushing die and the full length bushing die. Works fine, Sinclair had the dies in stock, no waiting.

I just got notified PT&G is sending my 6.5 x 55 AI with 0.160 freebore for 130 - 140 g bullets reamer is being shipped. Redding stocks the dies and charges ~$160 for the set I just want a type s full length sizer for about 4 loadings and get by with my 6.5 x 55 type s neck sizer the other loadings.

HAVE TO READ ****Custom reamers and Dies

I always order my custom reamers and dies from a place in Canada called Taylor tool. Check out their website. They have a catalogue on their with all of there the inventory stock, but will also do specials with blueprint stock. I always get my special done there because of the fast shipment time. Anyways here is the link www.taylortool.com It has a lot of info on there so I find it is sometime just easiest to call for price/delivery. If you do I would ask for Colleen, the number is 519-658-9378

good luck and happy tapping ;D ;D

If it is truly a custom chamber design, Dave Kiff can make the chamber reamer to your specs, and a resize reamer.
What I did was to use a Newlon resize blank and a Forster micrometer seating die for the parent case.
Then use the resize reamer in the Newlon blank and enlarge the sleeve in the Forster seating die with the chamber reamer.

Gamma,

+1 to what Dirtball said. I shoot a 6.5x55 improved called the 6.5 GWI. I use a Newlon F/L sizing die Provided by Greg) with a Forster seating die by way of Greg Walley of Kelblys Inc. (The cartridge designer) Feel free to contact him at his following website (Kelblys and Greg will build you the most accurate cartridge you ever shot.) //www.kelbly.com/main.htm It’s easy to tune with several powder/ bullet weights and will shoot easily shoot inside a 6.5x284 without all the tuning hassles associated with that caliber. If you decide to go this route, contact me and I'll walk you through the fine points when you get it up and running.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

This is the part I dont understand. I have been down this path many times just like youall... and for what? Just ended up spending more money than I needed to accomplish the same end result.
Lets take the 243AI as an example.
You order a chamber reamer ~ $120 plus your normal chambering and threading costs.
You order a Sizing reamer from Dave to match the chamber reamer @ ~ $120. then order a Newlon die blank for $70. Gunsmith cuts the die for you $50, You send it to get it case hardend so that it polishes up correctly $40 spend another week polishing tillyour arm falls off. (time=money) And now you have that perfect fit from chamber to sizing die. Yahoo awsome. $280 for one die plus you have tennis elbow. but damn it works sooo good.
I have done this a time or two its always an adventure.

I have a new way of doing it now and this does not work for wild cats in some instances but a typical cartridge that Redding makes a die for.......
Call Dave Kiff tell him you want YOUR CHAMBER reamer to match the redding 243AI (PN 91420) Full length die add in your nk diam. and freebore specs. Order your Redding die set for ~ $120 and your done.
Same exact result in the end with a savings of ~ $200 give or take if the single FL die cost $80 and no hassle, no tennis elbow, and 4 shipping costs, and of course the wait times.
The money is one thing.. its the dang hassle of getting it all done is a whole nother animal.

Some of us like to tinker and i get that, but sometimes there is an easier way that is more cost effective.
Just my thoughts on this and how I go about it. You may disagree and thats fine, I respect your view's as well. This is not THE way its just A way to go about it.
Good luck Gamma and best wishes.

I completely agree, if there are dies available for the chamber you want, then by all means go that route, in fact I have built a couple of rifles just because I got a set of dies cheap and thought it would be interesting to try that caliber.
What I referred to is when you start with a piece of brass and design your own chamber then there are only a couple of options.
