Custom FL Sizer Die

What your thoughts on getting a "custom" FL sizer die.

I understand you take three times fired brass and send them to a custom die builder.

Is the reason: you can easiley control bumping your headspace, say you want .000 to .001?

Will the custom die be set up for the neck tension you want, say .001 or .002?

I just wondering, is the the main reason for havng a custom die built?

Thanks, Dennis

Most of the custom FL dies have neck-shoulder bushings in them, and the body will size the case just enough to allow it to chamber with no problems..
A custom die will be a perfect fit for your chamber, not a one size fits all...

I started down the road of seeking a full custom die but on the way decided to contact Forster after reading an article on this site about honed necks. I bought one of their standard FLS dies and had the neck honed to 0.3345. i use Lapua brass, turn the necks and shoot .308 palma. This "custom" die give me much of what I need in terms of producing highly consistent neck tension measured at 0.001. You still have to adjust the die for the required shoulder bump but once set, it stays there. So for me, the main advantage of a custom die is producing resized brass with consistent neck dimension and tension.

Another benefit of the Forster honed neck option is the cost is only a few dollars above the price of their standard die.

have to admit that my Warner die is a thing of beauty, albeit a pricey piece of gear. Now five reloads and approaching time to anneal on the 300 Lapua cases that I use in my Warner-built Barnard. It was a bit of spur of the moment add-on to the rifle project, but allegedly will get 20+ loadings from the brass.

Pretty neat to think that my die was cut by the same guy that cut my rifle chamber.

Just a question about custom made sizing dies, from someone who has never had one. Since the die is dimensionally matched to your present chamber, does it not become unusable when your present barrel is shot out, and needs to be replaced?

Seems like the only way it could be used with the replacement chambering would be if both chambers were cut with the same reamer, back to back with no chambers cut "in-between".

Just askin.

Not the same reamer, the die has to be smaller than the chamber.

Some guys use a reamer for the dies, some make them without a reamer.

Mark Spencer from Spencer Tool and Grind will fix you up. Great guy to deal with and with stand behind his products 100%.

Erik: Thanks for setting me straight on that, but, if the sizer is made to be an exact, proper fit for the present chamber, how can it be used for any future chambers that were cut with different reamers?

All chambers have slightly different dimensions even if they are cut to SAAMI specs. There are still minimum & maximum tolerances.

Seems that if the sizer is a "perfect" fit for a dedicated chamber, when the barrel is toast, so is the sizer.

This question, unanswered until now, has kept me from ever having a custom sizer made.

Most people with custom dies have their own reamers. So when the barrel is toast, just chamber another one with the same reamer as the original.
