Custom case foam recommendations?

I have finally reached the point in my career (work) where I’m going to have to fly to big matches. The first will probably be Fclass Nationals in Raton.

I need to have hard cases for the F-Open rifles. I’m not sure what case I want yet because I’m still looking at my options.

Questions:

I will be separating the action from the stock. Should I pull the scopes off and carry them on (with my spotter) or leave them on the rifle?

What about the trigger? Leave it on the action or take it off?

Has anyone here used mycasebuilder.com? Do you recommend them? Any hints?

I am considering other logistics. Is it cheaper/better to fly with your front rest, rear bag, and ammo, or ship them ahead with the gun cleaning stuff? I’m using an old Farley right now and am in line for a Neo.

What other problems beyond these.

Keith,
Bob Bock had Kalispel Gun Cases make some cases for the US F-Open team in 2005 when we went to South Africa. His design had a separate compartment for up to 2 barrels. I took my barrel out of the action and put it/them in the compartment. The stock with action, trigger and scope were put in the other compartment. Has room for action wrench etc. Used this to go to SA, Ireland and UK. No problems. Get to range, screw barrel on and shoot. Built of heavy sheet aluminum and welded together. The design made all the dimension/wt. rules for airlines. The company went out of business but others are making them. Remember Bob’s design is a custom one. Took a light soft case also.

I have been using special forwarding companies for years to pre-ship things like my Scuba Gear and Ski Equipment, so I do not have to worry about getting to somewhere and needing those items only learning that they did not make my flight or connection. These forwarders will handle firearms and bond them.

That being said, one thing I have learned over all the years flying is that if you add Excess Insurance to your articles and I mean real excess, like at least $5,000 or more, the items will be tagged with special tags and hand carried from area to area.

The 2 biggest problems we have run into is the weight of the ammo and the sandbag. IATA rules says 11# max but Alaskan will allow #50# in the US unless you cross an international border. The other issue is the sandbag because it is so dense that the x-rays won't penetrate for a picture. The guys had to do some sweet talking to be able to fly with the bags.

You might want to consider shipping the ammo and bags with the SEB rest in a big Pelican box then flying with the rifle and optics. Make sure everything is well padded.

Took me about an hour on mycasebuilder to design this by uploading pictures of my gear, tracing them, and then picking a layout:

Keith, here is how we do it.

Pelican 1750 with Kaizen Foam in one side and standard foam in other side
Storm 2620 with all Kaizen Foam

This setup transports a rifle, SEB Neo, and Sand Bag. For the rest of the stuff (stand, mat, shooting bag, soft rifle case), we use an Ogio 9800 sport bag (beefy).

Our goals:
-keep weight and length below the hernia limit and airline penalty maximums: 50lbs & 64"
-safest mode: separating stock and barreled action is safer.
-minimize amount of break down required.
