Custom Build

I'm looking to build my first full custom rifle. So I figured I'd start with the action. I don't want to sell my sports car to finance it, so all total I'm willing to spend $2K - $2.5K tops for everything including equipment for reloading. Looking for an action that is reliable and very smooth to operate. I thought about the Savage Target and Remington actions but I would still have to put more money into them in order to get that smooth handling type performance I'm looking for. I'm not sure at this time which cartridge I will be shooting but I do know it will be a .224 bullet and it must not be complicated to load but it must be very accurate with long barrel life.

If you start adding costs of a true custom action etc, the $ that you're starting with really says Savage target action. Most custom actions will start at $1000 & go up. Another $800 for a good barrel & stock. It can be done assuming that you can do your own work. Your project is really saying to me, 223 in 1-8 twist on a Savage action. Good starter platform & it will have a long shelf life.

Larryh128,
Been there, done that exact build and no I can't do that type of work on a bolt gun. But I have put a couple of black guns together from a bucket of parts. Also did a Remington 700, too. Both these guns shoot <1MOA @ 100/200 yards but I am searching for that one that can do some crazy accurate groups at <.5MOA @ 100/200 yards. So, what action would you suggest that cost around $1000? Besides the 22PPC, in your opinion, what is the other most accurate 22 cartridge?

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 223 but I'm sure that the 22 PPC will have a slight advantage. Take a look under the action link from the home page. There is a bunch of info on the various actions available. A lot of it depends upon whether the rifle is going to be carried further than from the truck to a bench.

22 PPC .100 short is the king of the 22 hill. Brass is kinda a pain.

Maybe you'd consider buying a used benchrest rifle in 6PPC. Lots of PPC Light Varmint (LV) rifles around somewhere close to the dollar figure that you mentioned. You hear a lot about short barrel life in the 6PPC, but that is .1 MOA barrel life, not .5 MOA barrel life.

Look in the classifieds on http://www.benchrest.com/ , if that kind of thing would interest you.

$1,800 - http://benchrest.com/class/index.php?a=2&b=4581 Both 6PPC and 30 BR barrels.

$1,300 - http://benchrest.com/class/index.php?a=2&b=4274 if you're looking for more like a super varmint rifle.

$2,000 - http://benchrest.com/class/index.php?a=2&b=4709 . Super nice for that price.

Check out Bob White's "The Shooters Corner" website....if you find something that fits your needs ( he can rechamber ) you are not to far away to see his vast collection of used BR and varmint rifles. He knows true accuracy and has a pile of IBS points to prove it.

You're dreaming. However, you should be able to find a good gently used rifle/gear for that budget. Building from new, forget it, or sell the sports car.

I have always like the Remington actions. For your price range I would say pick up a used Rem 700 action and a new bolt and parts from Pacific Tool & Gauge. With minimal work from a good gunsmith you could have a really nice action

shootr,

Savage and Remington are good guns to build on, but they are still factory action, they open and close like factory action. Your barrel, stock, trigger, gunsmith work will cost the same, no matter what action you build on. The action work on a Remington will cost you, what a Remington clone will cost. A custom is not far from that. Used is the way to go. you get a trigger, action, and stock, and most of th time a barrel that is very good. I have a Bat B and a Stiller Diamondback now that I got for about half the cost of a new one.

22 br. a rem. action that is trued correctly with a good match barrel . there is one on this site for sale trued by a very good builder i believe 600.00 with a jewel. can someone tell me what triggers come with the custom actions that cost 800.00 to 1000.00 or do you pay extra for that ? T.R.

1. buy savage LRP in .223 ~$900
2. buy a vortex viper PST or Sightron Siii ~$800
3. buy seekins rings and an egw rail ~$200
3. buy and RCBS rock chucker supreme master reloader kit or redding kit and dies ~$400

that's $2300 and will run you out to 1000yds with the 80s and 90s after you get some trigger time up close

Hey guys, thanks for your input. We had a bad storm come through our area last Friday night, I just got power restored yesterday evening. Currently, I am having a 6mmBR built on a Rem 700 with a 3 groove Pac-Nor SS super match grade barrel, Shilen competition trigger and McMillan Edge stock.

The Barnard action comes with a very good (Barnard) trigger. Otherwise, I'm not aware of any 'custom' action that includes a trigger. I think every custom action I've owned was paired with a Jewell trigger. This list includes BAT, Stolle (Panda), AMT, Time Precision, and Pierce.

You said you did a Savage build, and only getting 1 moa at 100 and 200 yards I have 5 different savages and all will shoot under .5 moa at those distances I would maybe invest in how I am reloading, reloading for accuracy is a key factor it takes time, do you have a good rest?
when you load are you trying different spots in and out from the lands most of my savages for some reason shoot best .010 out from lands.

from what you said it maybe you don't reload yet you included in your price reloading equipment, again, reloading is a key factor for getting top accuracy from any rifle in good condition they all have a sweet spot.

I do my own work and would not recommend using a Remington receiver, truing the reciever, and using a Kiff bolt. You will end up with a nice receiver that way for the cost of a custom.
For a .5 MOA rifle, I would take a Remington receiver, rebarrel it, custom trigger, custom stock with a good bedding job. You would have to double this investment to gain at most another .1 MOA.

I think there is a trued cone bolt XP-100 action in the benchrest.com classified for $595. Might be something to consider.
