Custom Actions

I've known about the Kelby , the Bat and a few other custom actions over the years .

But whats the word on the "Stillar" action that McWhorter uses ?

To be totally honest I'd never heard of that one until I started following their webpage a bit .

I am in the process of building a switch barrel on a stiller predator. This action is tight, smooth, and feels like a bank vault when locked. I don't know anything about the others, but I like my stiller. ;D . There made in Texas, and that was the biggest seller for me, I'm a Texas boy ;)

They are fine, IF, you can get in touch with them, you can get a delivery date from them, and IF they even come close to the delivery date.

Purchased a Tac 30 last fall. No problems with getting in contact. Customer service was excellent and delivery date came in within a week of what they quoted me.
I asked a ton of questions and they answered every time in a timely fashion. I had a 6.5 Creedmore built on the action and I could not be more pleased.

Russ at Stillers seems to be available everytime I have ever called and their service is great, never had a problem, have two Stiller Tac 30's and they are excellent actions with a great a"feel".

I have two Nesika model J and K and Bat SV. My Bat is smoother than the Nesika J. The Nesika J was made in South Dakota after the move. Either way great shooters.

If you are interested in a steel action, be sure to check out Defiance and Pierce actions, both top tier.

Is Nesika still in production ?

I was under the impression after Dakota bought them out and then Dakota disbanded or whatever you wanna call it production had stopped ?

Same with the Miller single shot action ?

The originator of Nesika started Defience Machine. Great actions, I have fondled a few.. But I am hooked on BAT myself. You cant go wrong with most Custom actions. By that I mean, one that has/was/is produced more than just a few dozen. Stick to the recognized names and you'll be happy.

Have a couple rifles built on Bighorn actions. Basically a Remington R700 body/footprint and a Savage like floating bolt head. Excellent fit/finish, very happy with them.

Okay on the "average" a rifle built on a custom action . Not a bench gun as such but more of a Long Range Hunter is gonna be about what ?

I'm thinking about $1250 for the action .
Maybe $450 for a stainless fluted barrel.
About $350 for a decent hunting stock .
Another $150 for a brake .
And about $200 for a trigger .

Thats $2400 in parts and you figure a known name smith will charge around a grand for putting it all together or am I off in my numbers ?

Looks to me that $3500 is about the starting line ?

$1000.00 to put it together might be a tad high.

Alot of good gunsmiths will install the barrel for around $300 or less. But that is my experience so far. I might be getting a discount as I ussually rebarrel at least one rifle a year. Sometimes more.

Or am i better choosing a batt action?

Barnard is a great action. You won't go wrong with either. Just ordered a Bighorn for myself for a field gun. One of the best values out there IMHO. ;D

A great number of shooters on the US Palma team shoot Barnard actions. I will be building more rifles. They will be built on Barnards. I doubt that there is a stronger action made.

Stiller predator 950
Krieger barrel 320
McMillan stock 750
Jewell trigger 220
Bottom metal 120
Gun smith 250 barrel install, 125 glass bed

The McMillan stock is high for me because I will have them install pillers, adjustable cheek rest, and flush mount sling attachments. The last McMillan I ordered for a hunting rig ran 500, and my name was inlayed in the barrel channel. Just be sure to have all your barrel measurements, length of pull, color, and any accessories planed out before you call. I am half way done acquiring parts for my build, hope it helps.

you can get the McMillans from Rick Bin at 24 hr campfire for a decent price if you ask me. but you are right they are not cheap once you factor in bedding and pillars. I had one stock which mcmillan installed pillars I was able to push the pillars out by hand. I think i will have my GS pillar bed them and save the money an McMillan doing it after that.
My last one was right at $462 including 2 flushcups

My next 20 PPC looks like this

Atlas action: $950
Pacnor barrel $310
McMillan stock $462
Jewell trigger $220
Chambering: $200
Pillar Bedding: $175
