Custom Actions and prefits

Which custom actions will accept a Rem-Age prefit? I've heard that Big Horn's will and was wondering if there are others.

shootnjunky, that will work for me also if I choose to go that way. Big Savage fan to begin with.

Thanks,

Not an answer to your question but I'll throw out an opinion. Most of the accuracy of a rifle comes from the barrel. A pre-fit on a custom action is kind of like silk on a pig. I would take a factory action and Krieger chambered by a good smith over a custom and a prefit. Just my opinion on the matter...

I would think any action that would take a Remington 700 prefit would also accept a REMAGE prefit. The thread size would be the same, and the only difference is that the standard remington headspaces with the shoulder, while the REMAGE has adjustable headspace using the REMAGE jam nut. That said, I suspect custom actions may not be made to accept a standard 700 prefit.

A Savage Target Action of course would accept a Savage prefit.

1 1/16 x 16 TPI. Defiance Machine, Surgeon, Stiller ect. Altho it may be cheaper, having the barrel shoulder on the action/lug in a traditional manner is more consistent and easier than messing with headspace gauges and a barrel nut IMO.

I also see some custom actions makers claim a longer thread length in the action for the barrel. That would seem to eliminate using a standard pre fit. The longer thread length would have to be allowed for. Seems to me you could still use the REMAGE nut, but it would now be a custom threading, not the standard length. Bolt face allowance in the barrel may be different too.

If you want a custom action to use drop in barrels with why not go with the Shilen. Savage threads, Remington footprint and takes Remington triggers(like jewels). I almost did this but I am going with shouldered barrels now.

The new Ultimatum action is also designed to use the Remage setup; and their response times were extremely fast in answering all of my questions.

RonAKA, I believe the longer thread lengths you mention are due to (some) custom actions having an integral recoil lug, which is threaded through. There are plenty of threads on both the barrel and nut, no real difference in thread length vs. a standard action and recoil lug design....unless someone got a little crazy with their customizing abilities.

Good point on the theaded integral lug on some customs. A remage should work fine on them as well. What is this new ultimatum action youre talking about?

The Ultimatum action is new, they are located in B.C. Canada. The only reason I know about it is because this site had it listed in the Daily Bulletin last week.
Do a Google search for it, there is a video on YouTube from the mfg. as well as a little chatter on snipers hide.

Yes, the Ultimatum action has an integral recoil lug and provides longer thread. Not sure that was the one I recall advertising the longer thread though. In any case the Ultimatum action is claimed to accept both a standard Remington shoulder barrel or a barrel nut.

BAT 3L & 3LL, as well as Bighorn actions with integral lug also have longer thread tenon because of the lug being threaded. Defiance advertises their actions as having a longer thread tenon also. The new Bighorn TL3 actions also come with 20tpi only. Like someone else said, doing a Remage pre-fit on a custom action is a bit of a backa$$wards approach IMHO. Might as well go with a shouldered bbl and not worry about it.

Bighorn TL2 come with either 16 or 20 tpi; TL3 is 20 tpi. They are excellent actions, very accurate and durable. The first generation Bighorns have a longer tenon and longer shank, which I prefer. The TL2 was actually designed for more of a "drop-in" to Remington stocks and that is why their integrated the recoil lug. I don't think you can go wrong with a Bighorn with either a standard barrel or prefit.
