Custom actioned magnum, what action????

Having a 300 win mag built off of a fully custom action. Was orignally going to go with a stiller predator, have been told to look at the BAT actions, anyone have a preference as to which one they would go with, I can get the stiller in a matter of a week or so because I've been on their waiting list for 4 months, the BAT would take a bit longer, not that that is an issue.

You cant go wrong with either action, but for the money Stiller is the way to go. I just finished a custom build of a long range .308......it included Stiller Tac-30, Rock Creek 11.25 twist (28" finished), Timney 2.5#, Bushnell 6500 4.5-30 tactical, all mounted in an AICS stock. The first group shot was .224 with factory Black Hills, the next group was a pet load and printed .188" for three shots.....needless to say I was pretty impressed......so my vote is for Stiller Precision.JMHO...

Sounds like a real shooter, what do u think of those scopes? Been debating what glass to buy for my build and have been looking at them.

just curious, how do you get a .188" group with a .308 dia. bullet?, how do you measure your groups ?

I'm assuming he is measuring inside making the group truly a .496 although if you measure outside and subtract .308 to give you center size, you could have a .188 group, it would just be a ragged hole.

You are correct, measure outside to outside of bullet holes, then subtract the bullet diameter for what is called center to center distance. Yes it was just one ragged hole. The Bushnell 6500 series scopes are great.....dont get me wrong they are not to be compared with a Nightforce, but for an all around scope, the 4200's and the 6500's are great. With a 20 moa rail, I only need around 39 moa to get to 1000 yards. The 6500 has plenty of adjustment to get me there.

wvuredneck09,

You did not say what you are going to do with the gun. The Predator is a hunting, Tac action, a liitle less tight than a Benchrest action, like the Bat, or the Stiller benchrest action. If you building a long range benchrest 600 - 1000 yds, go with the bench action. If you are going hunting - tac, go with the Predator. I have a Stiller Diamondback and a Bat B, both are great action.

Glenn Harrison, Defiance Machine. Highly recommended as a man that knows about quality and customer service. 100% mega action maker.

Just asking , because I don´t have much(if any) experience.

For 300yrs and longer, will a BR action(say Stiller Diamondback) have much more advantages over Stiller Predator, due to the tighter tolerance?
Assuming the same shooter and caliber.

Mine will be a hunting rig but I talked to my smith today and he insists on the BAT and with the accuracy guarantee I'll take his advise, either way if anyone doesn't want to wait I'm next in line for a predator long action with a magnum bolt.

I think you will be getting a great action with the BAT. However, I would be reluctant to use any BR action for hunting, given that you are bound to get dirt and debris into and on the action. Given the BAT's tight tolerances, there is a chance it will bind should anything find it way to the bolt ways. I would go for the Predator. It is still far better than a production action, without being so tight as to cause issues in the field. Certain things are made for certain applications, and BR actions are not built with field use in mind.

+1 on Kenny474's comment, a BR action is too tight for use in the field, as in hunting. Just a little bit of dirt or dust can ruin a real good day.
