Custom Action?

Hey Guys. I have saved up enough money to purchase my first custom action. Before I buy I am looking for some input from the people that will know. I kinda have a tall order, this is why I come seeking guidance. I would like to build a switch barrel rig eventually. I want a small caliber like the 20-222, as well as a BR or .308. I am planning on buying two bolts when I purchase the action. I would prefer a repeater action because it will be used in tactical competition as well as live varmints, eastern NY). Is this to much to ask from a single action? Am I going to have problems with the magazine or follower feeding this big of a difference in cartridge? Any input on this subject will be greatly appreciated. Does anybody know of an action that I should look at? I have been researching Nesika mainly. They seem to be the closest for what I am looking to do.

Thanks
Nick

I had the same dilemma about nine months ago.

Here is my old post.

Still waiting for the rifle though.

hope it helps

Hey that is going to be a great rig. I like the components. Thank you for the post. Good luck with the rifle post some pictures when you get it.

Nick

P.S. Have you ever used that action before? If you have how do you like it? That was one that I also looking at.

SilverFox: I am also considering a rifle build for varmints, coyotes and pigs. Thought I would go with the 6.5X47 Lapua. I have been looking into field actions and stocks. Actions looking at are Stiller Predator repeater and Surgeon repeater. Thought also of the new Borden but did not consider the Grizzly. Your action choice is really nice.

One thing I do like about the Surgeon is the integral top scope rail, it has a stiffening effect to the action, especially a repeater with an open bottom) just like the Panda. Also like the integral recoil lug. What other actions did you consider? and, why did you choose the Grizzly?

On the stock question: I have a dilemma, either choose a tubegun platform with the variety of butt stocks available for it or go conventional such as the McMillan A-5,nice stock) or the AI 1.5,also a nice stock).

Since I have never shot a tubegun I simply do not know how they feel and handle when shooting. If anyone can provide some insight I would greatly appreciate any comments on this. I'm really looking for a direction on this project with respect to the stock decision and any thoughts on the Surgeon action versus Stiller/Borden/Grizzly et al,Rem 700 type for field use)
Thanks, shcal.

Nick,

I think most of the actions, can be made to be mag feed. I like the BAT actions. I would get a recoil added under the action, not pinned. This setup works great for a switch barrel gun. I have a Hall with three barrels, Searcy with two, Bat with one for now. Some come with a lug on the action. Most of the new action, you can add a extra bolt at any time. All the Name brand actions are good, pick the one you like best.

shcal, I dont think you could really go wrong with any of the actions your considering, they're all high quality actions. One other that has been getting good reviews are the Lawton actions.

I started thinking about and aquiring the peices for a varmint gun about a year ago also.I opted for the Borden Alpine single shot and the caliber choice is the 6mmAI.I went with a Lilja 1-12 twist Rem varmint contour and even after a year of thinking about the stock to go with, still havent made up my mind.
