custom action vs factory...

what are some of the advantages and pitfalls of going with a custom action over one of the new Savage actions other than cost...the Pierce Engineering action is the one I was looking at along with the Savage...

I am wanting to build a 260 remington for my wife to shoot...it will mainly be a paper puncher and a bean field deer rifle ...bullets will be 107 SMK's and up so a 1-8" or a 1-8.5" twist 26" #7 contour barrel is what I am planning...

I really like the Savages because of the parts available. Many stocks out there, tons of very high quality barrels already made that can be shipped to your house for you to install if wanted to and they are very accurate. Im sure you would be extremly happy with a savage with a good barrel and a good stock like a sharp shooter supply stock.

You are comparing Apples to Oranges. I have built rifles on both actions. The Savage has its positives and negatives as does the Pierce or any Remington clone. The Savage action with Accutrigger is about $450.00. The Rifle Basix Sav-2 trigger is about $150.00. The Evolution trigger sold by Fred Moreo is a propritary trigger and requires purchase and fitting by Sharp Shooters Supply. The Pierce is about $975.00, and a Jewell trigger is about $150.00 more. The Jackson Trigger is about $350.00 more. The barrel blanks and gunsmithing to fit them will cost basically the same. There are pre-fit barrels for the Savage and non for the Pierce. In my opinion there are no pre-fit barrels that will hold a comparison to a custom chambered and fit barrels. I will admit that I am predijust because I fit barrels. The fit an finish on the Pierce is second to none. The fit and finish on a Savage is factory, what can I say. The Savage will shoot well. The Pierce will shoot well. There are a number of stocks that will fit both. Just how much is your wife going to shoot. Does she expect the best or what will do. Will she even know the difference. A nice customized Savage is a fine shooting rifle within a budget. A Pierce makes a fine custom action that makes a fine custom rifle.

Five years ago I would have laughted if you had asked me this question. Today I have a whole new found respect for the Savage. With the influx of Remington clones and the surge by Savage I forsee Remington loosing it's nitch in the market and becoming part of firearms history.
