Custom Action--Round or Flat bottom?

All of my rifles up until now have been based on a Remington action and I want to try a custom for the first time. It will be a single shot and it will be a 6mm or a 6.5mm with 8 twist. What are the pros and cons of flat bottom vs. round? I even saw a multi-flat model. Thanks for all advice and input.

Well, I have a Shilen DGV in the barrel nut version. It's a round bottom action that is Rem 700 compatible. It's a custom action on the top, so Rem 700 scope mounts don't work, but that's not a problem. It's 6BR in 8-twist ratchet rifled 4-groove and it shoots very well, and even better if I do my part ::)

A flat bottomed action (like a Stolle Panda) has more bedding surface. That is one of the reasons that they have been so successful in the benchrest game.

The sides of the action have a slight taper so that once bedded, you can get em out of the stock.

Pandas and their clones have certainly won many Aggs. over the years but a quick look at the equipment lists from major BR matches will show a slew of BAT round actions as well as Bordens and Farleys. If the rifle is assembled correctly and the barrel is a good one, I don't think round vs. flat has much steam as a debate.

Doc,

The OP just wanted to know the pros and cons of round vs flat bottomed.

If you look back over the last 20 years of BR shooting, the Panda is the King of wins. The BATS and such are new in the market, relatively speaking.

Today the newer actions are round, that is true, but the most wins will still go to flat bottom actions or round actions that were sleeved.

Just a historical perspective.

Agree that round or flat really doesn't matter, it is the final assembly that counts.
