Custom action for a 338-378 WBY - recommendations

Hello,

I am looking to have a long range rifle built on a single shot action. Since the barrel will be something along the lines of an HV contour and 30" long, I'd like the action to be very stout.

What are some recommendations? In stock would be a great bonus.

Some that I've considered:

-Allen Precision Raptor
-BAT "M"
-Stiller TAC 338

Are there better options? Thanks!

You might want to call BAT and Stiller and talk to them about the tenon size and tell them what you are building. If the tenon on the barrel is not big enough it won't handle the pressures as good. Like BAT has a CT model which is an M with a larger tenon. I know gunsmiths don't like to chsamber REM actions to 338 Lapua because of tenon and boltface. Matt

Used one for years in the 70's-early 80's built on a Brevex Mauser. It was not single shot but you could adapt it. The rifle was used for hunting in Canada and Alaska, had a heavy 26" Krieger barrel, custom Kevlar stock and weighted about 10 1/2 # without scope. Recoil was very sharp and heavy. I finally sold it when I couldn't carry it up the mountains. Let me know when you start your build. I probably have some components around here, new brass, dies that I don't need.

I am building a .338 Lapua with a Stiller TAC338. I believe they are the best action for the money out there. For a hunting rifle, you won't need a more accurate action.

That BAT L model is what I build most 338 Ultras on, you'll surely never want anything better, or bigger .....,

Really sold on the big weatherby? Not the Lapua or Norma which is the better of the 3 for precision?

Might want to look at the 1000yd shooters with the unlimited weight setups. You seem to want a massive receiver for your massive barrel and that is good reasoning for sure. Maybe look at the .50bmg and Chey-TAc suitable actions?

I dunno... Had a .30-378wby and .300 and .338 ultra mags. Sold all the big ctg rifles and went with .338/300win for versatility. At max loadings with 250gr it comes very close to .340wby which is very close to the Lapua.

Sako TRG-S rifles were factory chambered for the .338-378 and the Lapua mag. A little hard to find them these days, and they have a mag well, but being specifically engineered to handle the big ctgs puts that action in a class all its own for sure.

Why not look at a .376 Chey-Tac? Sierra seems to still offer the 350gr .375 matchking. Could also do a .338 Chey-Tac. Recall an article on the Chey-Tacs in Precision Shooting back in 01/02... Maybe they never gained acceptance

Maybe somebody at Benchrest Central can put you onto a link for 1000yd heavy shooters, or are they shooting 1500yds or a mile these days? Guys at longrangehunting may also be in the know.
