Custom action firing pins

I’ve been interested in getting a used benchrest rifle to play with, but see a lot of people having issues finding firing pins and springs for the custom actions that are no longer in production. I dont want to get bogged down with something that I cant get parts for.

Do any of the custom actions use Remington firing pins and springs ?

Some use 700- patterned pins, shrouds, cocking pieces and springs. Kelbly's has been the leader there. Others will use 700 or Model Seven springs. Still others use all proprietary parts.

The availability of spares is something to consider on an out of production action. I have one here with a broken cocking piece....been trying to find a replacement for over a year with no luck.

In the used market, it's tough to beat a Kelbly's action when it comes to spares and service.

Hope this helps. -Al

Yes, I am hoping to find a decent Kelbly or Stolle, but was kind of wondering about the Shilens, Bordens, Harts, Nesika, etc. Its hard to find many details on the older stuff, so its probably best to stay away from them.
Or I could play it safe and look for a 40x build.

Thinking of fire control here, but.....

I'm not sure the availability of a factory spring or pin would rank highly on my priority list.
Details matter. Mass production is mostly about production and some level of function. Precision is not particularly important.

Doesn't really address the OPs question. Food for thought.

Depends on your goals also.

The main goal is to not sink money into something, then find that parts are not available.

Something in current production could be an option, like Defiance, Kelbly Atlas, or Bat, but I’m not ready to spend on a new build yet.

This would just be for informal shooting on my own, not competition.

I have made firing pins as a “favor” for several shooters. One for an old Swindlehurst Action from years back.

Most action manufacturers now make all of that stuff on CNC Machines. So I doubt any of them would bother writing a program to make obsolete parts. Heck, many might not even have anyone with enough skill on a manual machine to make one.

As for springs, you can adapt a spring from something similar. It might take a little trial and error.

I'm in the same boat. Just made a purchase on the used market. I'll see how it goes.
Jim Borden still has that style of bolt for the TPE.

Kelbly's is going to cease production of Pandas and perhaps other actions in the near future.

As long as Kelbly's is in business, I would be shocked if they did not support the products they have offered over the years. Good people to deal with, to say the least.

Unless the have a supply of “new old stock” firing pins for Panda Actions after production ceases, I would not count on it.

I might be mistaken, but doesn’t the Panda and other Kelbly actions of that length basically use a clone of a Remington short action firing pins.?

Yes...the Panda's, Kodiak's, Atlas, etc. use a 700 pattern pin, cocking piece, spring and shroud. The firing pins from my Panda, Kodiak and Atlas (stainless steel) are all the same and can interchange in the different bolt bodies.

Per Jim Kelbly, the aluminum bodied actions will be d/c'd when their current stock of aluminum for the receivers is depleted. The stainless actions will continue to be produced.

Good shootin' :) -Al
