Custom 6.5-284 rifle info

I am interested in having a rifle built in 6.5-284. It will be used for target shooting and hunting. I am 20 and dont have unlimited funds so i want to get all my parts as cheap as i can without getting junk. I dont know if i should buy an old used rifle or buy a new one and sell the extra parts to get an action. I am thinking of a model 700. What about the barrel and stock? Any info will help.

I'll chime in and throw out a couple ideas. First, for the cheapest M700, find a used one in 260 Remington and have the chamber recut with a 6.5/284 reamer. Other than that, you'll have to have a new barrel installed, which is probably the way you want to go for target shoting. Any used Remington with the .473" bolt face can be rechambered for the 6.5/284. You will have to concider the magazine length if you plan on feeding. Pac Nor is probably the best value for a quality barrel right now, but there are many great barrels being offered. You have many options, this is just a few.

Kind of hard to say exactly what to look for - a good used rifle, already built - is often a bargain. The barrel however may need to be replaced soon, particularly in a hot number like the 6.5-284.

HS Precision stocks are okay, and often avail used, at reasonable prices from guys moving up to McMillans or other more expensive stocks. I've shot some fine groups from the HS Precision stock, but prefer McMillan.

With the 6.5-284, you need to determine from the start if you want to build it on a long action or a short action. It can be a short action cartridge - and if you go that route you could just re-chamber a .260 Remington for it. You could also build it on a long-action, which would allow you to seat the bullets well out, for excellent long-range performance.

Here's a question for you about your cartridge choice though... If you're on a budget - why the 6.5-284? It's hard on barrels compared to say a .260 Rem, a 7mm-08 or a good old .308 Winchester. For example, it's not uncommon for a 6.5-284 to burn out a barrel in 1500 - 2000 rounds,or less) while it's quite common for a .308 Win to last 4000, 5000 or more rounds. Replacing quality barrels gets to be a significant expense.

When people ask me what cartridge to get started in precision shooting with, I often steer them towards the .308 Winchester, because it's a great all-around cartridge with good accuracy, and dependable performance over the long-run.

There's a great .308 article on the home page here.

Cody,

In order to get the best advice, you will need to say what type of target shooting and what type of hunting you intend doing. In general it isn't easy to make a rifle that is ideally suited for both. And the 6.5 x 284 is in my opinion not a hunting cartridge, or should I say there are other cartridges which are better for any type of hunting you might care to mention. Even for target shooting it is quite specialised - where it shines is in F-Class and Light Gun at the longer ranges, around 1000yds).

So if you could give some more details about intended use it will get you some better advice.

Start with a Savage and build it up as Funds become available.

I would suggest a 6.5x55SE as factory ammo is available and the brass is cheaper.

Get a Pacnor 3 groove 1-8 twist Stainless Super match pre-cut for a Savage.

Get a Long action for feeding...accutrigger should be good enough for a while.

I really like the set-up. Clunky, not as sexy as a Remington, but will shoot lights out.

RHINOUT!
