custom 22LR groups ?

I haven’t made the leap to .22 bolt gun custom builds. It’s so easy to instead rely on what the particular model is known to be capable of, like with a new gun. I was on the telephone within about 15 seconds of seeing this new(ish) posting on Wednesday, (I don’t consider the Custom Shop regulars to be custom guns).

My only disappointments over my time hunting down 52’s and 40-X’s for use in matches has been when the site hadn’t been updated, and that perfect one is already gone.

On match .22’s, whether truly custom or just factory but expensive, I think these are safe-bet used buys, and far fewer out there than interested shooters. As to factory, guys don’t tend to try to dismantle and “improve” their .22 LR target rifles, so it’s relatively safe to assume they remained factory stock. As to true customs sight unseen, I would want to know an experienced Rimfre builder of match rifles did the work, rather than see a target pic, as I do believe rimfires can be difficult to get right, in other ways than CF.

There may well be a lot of custom or high end rifles sold by shooters who have been disappointed that their expensive rifle didn't automatically shoot small groups with whatever ammo was used. No rifle, whatever its make, can make inconsistent ammo perform like something else.

Scott, Like I said base it off who is selling. if you were selling, I am sure I will know exactly what I was buying.

Be well my friend,
Lee

not sure why there is a double quote?
You are correct Lee, the guy did know me and had seen the rifle do well at a sanctioned club match. I can not disagree with you or Todd.......but it's not always possible to shoot a used rifle. I look at it as kind of like building a new one. Is that new barrel going to be good/killer? Will the stock, action, and barrel make a good combo that behaves well together? It's all crap shoot.

Both of the top two (currently) on the ARA UL outdoor A-line are shooting used rifles with the barrels that were on the guns when purchased. I do know one of them was test fired before purchase, but no knowledge about the other. If you have the opportunity to test before purchase, do it. If not, you are not taking any more risk than building a new one, IMO.

Always good to hear from you Lee........stay safe.

I agree, Scott very logical and sage advice. buying used and looking at it like a new build is practical. that is why I mentioned a new barrel. I should have said possibility a new barrel.

same here, stay safe as well.

P.S I see the ammo fly is back;)

I'd say 75 % of the rifles we shoot against have potential to be a winning rifle. Shooting of a rifle before purchasing protects the buyer and the seller.
Todd
I agree Todd, I sold a few custom rifles actually 3 Falcons and only one the buyer based his purchase off the group targets I posted in the ad. you take a chance on the buyer being able to point it, but in this case, he wanted an entry UL for ARA. I am happy to say he did pretty good with it and was/is happy with it.

All I can do is make sure they know what they are buying, I never sugar coat anything. probably talked more out of buying a rifle then selling it. but I want to make sure they are happy with what they get and fit the needs they want.

Often it can depend on lots of issues including a little networking.
I have bought several rifles from forum classifieds and never really got burned by checking seller out a little. I would say I’d never likely consider a gun not shot in matches.
My last rifle buy which is in the running for my #1 10.5lb. gun was bought from an unknown, but I checked with guys that knew him, knew the gun, knew the circumstances, obviously some luck involved but a little homework and some digging often yields results. Turn over lots of stones, never know what’s under a few.
I never go actively looking for guns, have been fortunate to have worked with top flight smiths, but you’d be pretty dumb not to be aware as much as possible what’s going on in this small universe.

I have 2 rifles that have shot one extremely small group each at 100 yards no less and clean scores on the IBS BR-50 target as well. I only save photos of these two groups for my personal enjoyment. Neither rifle can shoot to this level consistently and neither can I. I doubt anyone else could either. One a Walther KKM I bought on the internet with a Harrells Tuner I added, the other a bone stock CZ 457 Varmint with a front bag rider. Both shooting different lots of RWS R-50. If I cherry picked these targets I would not be lying but would still be missrepresenting the true capability of each rifle.

New or used always comes down to one factor and one only. That is the price. At a certain price nobody in their right mind will pay for a new build if they can buy a used rifle cheap enough.

noticed a lot of high dollar 22LR's for sale lately and for some odd reason they never post any groups shot with rifle . would that be a great selling point for rifle ???? I would not even think about buying a high dollar rifle without groups .
Usually when a rifle is being sold it has an inherent problem, but not always, I told my 22 hornet to a forum member and he loves it, just the 17 hornet was more appealing.I'm with you lets see some groups.

Just because one fella can shoot a 2500 doesn’t mean another fella can, even with the same rifle and ammo lots. Too many variables! Tiny group pictures always make us feel nice but you just can’t put much stock into them. Show me 10 tiny groups in a row and I’ll perk up!

10! Wow, you're tougher than I am. A small group from 3 different days and I'll have a bunch of questions.

Not that the shooter would be interested in talking.
