Custom 22 LR value

FullSizeRender.jpg Can anyone advise me on how to value a Custom built 22 lr benchrest rifle? Dont know all the detail other than its on a Myers action, stock builder unknown, barrel maker unsure, Tuner unsure but it also has a fixed power 40x Leupold scope on it. Jewel trigger installed. All inside a Pelican case. I've not had opportunity to shoot it yet but hope to in the next few days. I just dont want to over pay for the rifle. I'm thinking somewhere between 60 and 70% of build cost. Advise appreciated.

looks like a kelby or mcmillan stock and harrell tuner. I would say about 1900 to 2300 would be a good price if it shoots well.

Building that rifle would have cost somewhere around $2,800 to $3,000 without the scope. The action is made by Stiller and based on a 40x. I have a Myers action on my gun and like it for the ability to load from either side. The scope and rings would go for about $750 to $800 used.

$2300-$2500 with the scope, given zero idea who built it.
I would shoot it and adjust accordingly and absolutely borescope it given that lots of guys are so bad at maintaining barrels and/or damaging them.

Thanks Guys, I am supposed to shoot the gun soon as the weather allows. I'm pretty leary of buying a used rifle from anyone. This one is local to me and I can at least try it. What should a person except for accuracy in this rifle with top ammo, Eley Tenex and such. Will the tuner make it shoot about any good ammo?

Be aware that long rifle ammunition that the barrel likes will make a big difference in the accuracy. Try several different brands and if you find something it really likes get as much from the same lot as you can. I would expect groups in the 1/4" size maximum because with my 581 Remington I can get 1/2" inch groups at 100 using the ammo it really likes. Though in competition, small bore silhouette, I use Remington or CCI standard velocity and the groups from the bench are larger but it is cheap enough that I can shoot often.
The only mods I made to the 581 was a trigger from Timney and a good scope. The biggest effect on accuracy in the silhouette game is the shooter - standing with no support shooting from 25 to 100 yards. It is supposed to mimic hunting but I have rarely taken off hand shots when hunting. There is always a rest of some kind involved.

Beautiful rifle! I really like silver rifles. Not sure why.
Anyhow, could you ask owner any more info or the previous owner? Depending on who made the rifle & how it was cared for it could run anywhere form 2000 to 3000 IMO without the scope .
But please take it out of the vice.....

Just keep in mind that you can have a brand new, rimfire bench gun built for $2100 - $2600. If a used rifle has a fair amount of wins or top 5 finishes, that can make a used rifle the same price or more than a new one. I think the Myers actions were $1300 new if I remember correctly.

yes, take it out of the vice please

I've always felt this type of rifle is worth the value of it's parts. Once you get into this price range... well obviously you can afford what you want and shouldn't settle for what someone else wanted.

Calfee chamber. Rifle is a drill. Only problem is a good problem. It will only shoot and extract either Eley Match or Tenex.

That's the problem I found shooting rim fire bench rest. Skimp on ammo and all the fun goes away!

Calfee chamber has nothing to do necessarily with who did the work, only what reamer was used.
As to your ammo issue, it sounds like you have a fouled throat, learn to clean it and the barrel.
Remember, without any rimfire BR experience, anything purpose built may look like a drill, winning record or winning capability.....another issue entirely.

I'd talk to Calfee and see if he chambered the rifle... he'll know the rifle. Looking at the scope set up it's not how he does it now but it maybe one of his earlier version. I think it's worth the time and effort to find out. To me and many other shooters it's worth more if Calfee did chambered or built the rifle with the caveat "if it shoots". It should be a good shooter he doesn't let them out of the shop if they don't shoot.

Makes no difference what the barrel says, the rifle will shoot good enough for me. BTW, it ejects the Eley black box without issue. For what ever reason I don't know.
