PLEASE READ Current Users, Please Update Your Passwords

Forum Boss

An older account was hacked after a connection on Christmas. The password was very short with the owner's initials and a simple number sequence. The owner also used his last name as his Forum handle -- not wise. The bad guys got in and attempted sales with Apple Pay Payment.

Sadly, some simple passwords can be uncovered with a "brute force" type attack. In addition, some members share passwords with other Forums.

1. Don't share your password with any other site.
2. Use a complex, unique password.
3. Consider employing two-factor authentication (which you should always use with bank and CC accounts).

4. Please update your password if you have not changed it within the last year.

Don't use a password like this: sam1965

Do use a password similar to: @gN4!8x3T# , with numbers, upper/lower case letters, special symbols.

How to Be Safe with Online Transactions.
1. NEVER EVER do any deal without a VOICE phone call. I am still not aware of a single member who lost money who made a VOICE CALL to talk to the seller.
2. Always insist on a custom photo -- with something wrapped around the sales item and the item placed in a different location.
3. Get the seller's full name and location, and check that with Google maps and TruePeopleSearch.com .

Payment Methods -- You Must be Careful
First -- we recommend you NEVER EVER use Apple Pay here. Same thing with most online payment systems or Bitcoin.

PayPal GOODS and SERVICES is ok, but not for guns, ammo, receivers.
Never use PayPal Friends and Family.

If a seller is requesting Apple Pay or PayPal Friends and Family, say NO and send a message to Forum Boss.

Bottom line -- even if an account has considerable history, remember that once a user's phone/computer is hacked, things can change in seconds. Do look for recent, meaningful postings. If there hasn't been much posting in the last couple of years, be very wary.

We want to repeat how important it is to be cautious, particularly if there is no recent meaningful posting activity. And if you do see a bunch of posts after a long time of inactivity... be suspicious. Pay attention to the spelling and the syntax.

When talking on the telephone, listen for a foreign accent. Ask questions that a regular shooter would know -- such as "what discipline do you shoot", "What dies do you like for sizing brass?". And invent some trick questions, such as "what kind of .50 Cal rimfire do you shoot?" and "Do you like Savage Scopes?".

Does this board have a way to employ second factor authentication ? - thanks

Forum Boss: YES that is an option, but it must be initiated by the user via your settings. And you need to make sure you gave a current email.

It is really important not to reuse passwords. It is far more common for an attacker to use lists of compromised credentials (usernames and passwords) than to pure brute force passwords which can be protected against reasonably on the server side by rate limiting. If your favorite password is on those lists, voila! They’re in.

Humans are REALLY bad at random. It’s best to use a password manager that generates unique and random passwords and helps you store and manage them. Keepass is my favorite and I strongly discourage cloud services like lastpass due to the potential for everything to be stolen.

Looked into my phone. I show 79 different things with passwords. Most all of the damnable things are different too.

Seriously - 79. Our whole society is a mess of different passwords. I would be more concerned with the loss or hack of whatever people have their passwords stored in. Good advice on just not answering any contact attempt you are not familiar with.

My password book is an absolute mess with updated, omitted and new passwords. Off to re-set the one for here. If this is my last post under my user name (har har) its been nice seein ya !!
