Curious if anyones still shooting Moly bullets?

Posted this question on another site and no one responded so posting on here to see if I'm the only moly shooter left.

I'm curious if anyone is still shooting moly coated bullets? Was the rage few years back but don't hear much anymore. I just came back from a dog shoot in Montana and forgot my 20 cal cleaning rods. Really bummed because usually clean my rifles each day. I've been a moly guy for years and was glad I was shooting moly bullets this trip. Ran 185 rounds down my 20 SCC and 175 rounds down my 20 VT and both rifles still were shooting well. I did have a new build XP 100R I was shooting that I re-barreled and chambered in a 20 SCC. Was a fun pistol and shot many dogs with it out to 350-400 yards but after about 60 rounds down the tube the accuracy fell off. It has less than 100 rounds since it was chambered so guessing the barrel wasn't seasoned like the other rifles.

Just curious if anyone else is shooting Moly?

There are those who poo poo bullet coatings but I have used moly since it’s inception. Up side I believe bbls have a longer string of accurate shots. They also clean easier. Down side is coating the bullets ( dry process) is a messy operation.

I also use HBN coating n see no difference in overall performance vs moly. The mess is white instead of black. Sort of the difference between having a dog with black hair vs white. U still have hair!

I have been using moly since approx '94. I like it that I can shoot a lot without having to clean the barrel and the barrel is easier to clean when I do it. Also, I believe that barrel life is much longer...a BIG plus with a varmint gun. Yeah, it can be messy but I do a lot of bullets at one time so I moly-coat maybe every 2 yrs. I can get dirty every 2 yrs.

I switched a few years ago to the water system and when done the bullets don't rub off moly. Once I rinse the bullets off good to go. I agree about barrel life! I sold a Cooper 6.5X284 that had 2300 documented rounds. Disclosed to buyer with providing if unhappy about accuracy I'd buy back. His smith ran a scope down the bore and called me questioning the amount of firings. He said after looking at the bore he's guess 500-800 rounds. Yup I'm convinced that moly does extend barrel life.

Why do you think moly coating is no longer popular? If it works why no more interest?

Where accuracy is the most important, few if any still use Moly. That doesn't mean it won't work, as just about anything we do works if we use a consistent and systematic approach.

LR BR rifles will still shoot match winning groups 100 rounds after cleaning with naked bullets. And they clean easily too after that. Moly wouldn't improve any of that, though Moly bullets could be tuned to shoot as well.

also, I have a pressure trace system, my experiments with Moly coated bullets and MV showed that to get back to the initial MV you had to get back to the initial pressure. That experiment was done with 215Hybrids in a 308, YMMV, but I don't rely on reading the tea leaves of primers and brass, I put a strain gage on the barrel and graphed the results.

I just read the thread Chop house pointed out started by Urbanrifleman and now I see the answer to my question. Again the internet BS rules. Very good thread, thanks Chop house. I've shot HBN as well as the moly and have seen similar results. Its clear we all have OUR OPINIONS.

How is it Internet BS when people explain their different opinions, experiences, and results?

The truth is just about everything works if approached systematically and consistently.

INTJ, sorry for the offense. I appreciate people sharing experience for sure but my experience is that many opinions are just that opinions from shooters with little to no experience. Not only on shooting sites but the internet in general. BLM is a perfect example.

Try the Wet process myself and several others described it in the link given above not nearly as messy no dust to breathe in which could be harmful and the coating does not rub off when completedF1F93E8E-D124-48A6-B847-647A202E0DC1.jpeg

Yes less velocity and less pressure means less friction of the bullet going down the barrel I have two different calibers that I shoot Molly in and had to come up approximately 1/2 of one grain of powder to get back to the same velocity but barrel life has been greatly extended from the original barrels before i used Molly

My opinion is just that my opinion my advice is for someone that does not believe my opinion to try it for themselves then it may or may not become their opinion also

338 dude well said! Try it, Thats the question I posed after years of experience with Moly I'm just surprised that it's no longer being used by many shooters. Walt Berger swore by it and used them for years. Ive been told John Whidden still does. I too have had to boost the powder to get the speed but still seems to give better cleaning results and longer barrel life. Just my opinion or should I say 2 cents which is what its worth.

While I agree the Internet is a place where it can be hard to separate speculative opinion from informed/experienced opinion, I don't think that is the issue here.

If an opinion is different it quickly becomes bs.
I havent seen a moly bullet being used in a br match since 97-98. I do see it with prairie dog hunters somewhat but not as much as in years past

I agree with everything you said I’ve only been using it about two years and I don’t see myself changing any time in the future on another forum I mention my 6.5x 284 Norma my first barrel was shot out about 900 rounds or so and I replaced it at 1100 rounds the current barrel I’m running now I have been using Molly since it was installed I am at 1600 rounds and still going strong and that’s all I have to say about that
