Curious about no-turn necks

I have some reamers that demand the necks be turned-----also have
some that are no-turn necks.

There was once a time when some shooters thought a skim cut on the
no-turn neck would be an improvement over the no-turn, presumably
to improve bullet concentricity.

Does this thinking still hold true ?

In theory, uniformity should be beneficial.

Try skim cutting some cases for your “no turn” barrels then shoot some groups to determine if it makes any difference in your rifles.

I think having uniform neck thickness would be beneficial if you anneal. I myself am too OCD to not have uniformity in all aspects of my brass prep. and reloading. It shows up on the target in my brain....

If done properly, how could it hurt?

That being said, I’ve seen a lot of neck turning jobs that would have been better left alone.

In theory neck turning is more uniform and therefore better. This originated when brass was not very consistent and BR shooters were trying to run close chamber to neck clearances. (Shooters were also neck sizing)

In practice that’s all been found to not matter much as shooters win with no turn necks. That doesn’t mean it’s time to fully abandon it, but it does mean the difference on target is pretty far down the list of importance.

In my world, there is nothing to lose by turning necks. Only potential gains. In turning necks on a non-turn chamber, moderation is your friend of course. Just my take on it is all.
