Crud -- Gunsmithing, Shooting, Moving

I just moved last year. Save yourself some headaches. Buy lots of markers and right the contents on all your boxes. When moving here, I just wrote “shop” on my boxes. Big mistake!!

How to pack your lathe and mill when you have a 60' driveway, 50' of which slopes down at a 15 degree angle. You can't back up a delivery van or trailer on the driveway.

The plan is for four guys to guide each machine as I slowly drive the pickup out of the garage with the machine pushing against the pickup. We'll put a barrier between each machine an the bumper. Then we just have to roll it on the lift gate of the moving truck (Enterprise 26' Diesel).

The lathe platform I made is stable enough that I think I could just let the lathe roll
down by itself, but I am not willing to take that chance. The mill stand I made is stable and I welded 1/2" x 13 thread inserts in the bottom of each leg. I had it sitting on heavy duty feet, I swapped those out with the casters.

For the lathe, I wish I had got 6" casters and spaced them an additional 2". The platform isn't high enough for my engine hoist to fit under. So I had to set each caster on a pair of 2x4s to get enough height. (The casters all lock in rotation and swivel.) After I pulled out the engine hoist I had to use a floor jack to remove the 2x4s.

The lathe weighs 1350 lbs on the stand, and my platform adds probably another 150 - 175. The casters are 1800 lb rating for the set of four. The mill weighs 900 lbs and my stand probably 200 more. I have 1200 lb casters on the mill.

Update. House in Post Falls, ID should be finished early Dec. In my apartment garage I added the weights, finished the inletting, and bedded the stock. Had an issue with a too tight chamber and a local shooter and forum member @Devin Wiggett let me use his lathe to polish the chamber to enlarge it a bit. I overdid the polish some.

Here are the two best groups I shot at its first 1000 yd match last month. A 4.33 and a 3.885.
