Crown lapping SS

lapping the crown on SS...using Garnet 600 grit. And a brass lap.
took forever, not much of a bite on the metal it sould seem ?

is there a better compound for the first stage of lapping?

How long did it take? I put a small lapped edge on the crown with 800 grit garnet and it doesn't take more than a minute and that includes recharging the lap and reversing the rotation once, as well as cleaning everything up. Maybe you are trying to take to much off. Got a picture?

If it is cut properly it doesn't need lapping.

If a good setup, fast turning speed, a super sharp cutter, and slow speed feed are used, there is no IF involved...

was lucky enough to be using some new Warner HSS insert bits.
feed from inside out, 525rpm, feed rate snails crawl

not that it looked bad at all ;D
