CROWN ANGLE IMPORTANCE

Does the angle of the chamfer of a crowned barrel,s muzzle have anything to do with the projectiles exiting accuracy if all is concentric and without fault on the exit point.I have read several posts about this and get the impression that the crowns chamfer,s only purpose is barrel muzzle exit point protection .The barrel can be A flat 90deg end as long as it is concentric without burrs or dints at the exit point and still have perfect accuracy.Opinions appreciated

I don't think the angle matters. I break the edge of the bore, chamfer) with a single flute countersink,82 degree) while others use a center drill,60 degree). My purpose is to keep from damaging the crown when a brush or jag is pulled back through the bore during cleaning.

Burl, The info that you have is correct.

The only reason I see for any type of recessed crown, be it cut at an angle or otherwise, is to protect it from dings. If you visit a BR match you will see that many of the rifles on the line have a simple 90 degree crown cut from the bore all the way out to the edge of the muzzle. Its easy to cut that way and BR shooters as a rule are careful with their rifles...

Please correct me if Iam wrong but there are those that subscribe to a thought that this first chamfer angle off the rifling allows a more perfect entry for the gasses and projectile into free air.Is there any evidence of this at all, or is this a commonly held urban myth so to speak.I was told a very convincing explanation for the importance for this chamfer angle and wanted to check its validity

There are those that subscribe to lots of things that have no merit.

Whether I cut an 11 degree, recessed or flat crown, once the barrel is dialed in, I pull a slight 60 degree 'chamfer' from the bore out to help ease the brush pulled back in. Only enough to catch the groove diameter slightly, then pull out.

Of course those that shoot the dark bullets don't quite need that extra feature!

I resemble that last comment...I actually cut that same 60 degree chamfer on a bunch of the barrels I do. For those folks that actually clean their rifles:D

It would be safe to say then not one of the top barrel makers contradicts these finding you all have made and I imagine you guys know the best of them. -I am in agreement with the consensus and can only think these ideas of crowns improving accuracy should have meant helping to safe guard accuracy by not exposing the end of barrel to unwanted knocks,.Whilst a well know concept to many I have never really known and was exploring crowning a suppressor end cap to increase accuracy -obviously not though but still worth doing to protect accuracy of the suppressors end cap exit point.
Thanks guys
