Crow Load

I need a good load for crows in my 12tw 6br. I'll be shooting out to 400 yards. I want something that will vaporize them. Will the light weight custom bullets do the job or should I stick with blitzking, ballistic tip, v-maxs, etc. I have n135 but I realize I may need to try a different powder for the lighter bullets. I know this site has a varmint load page but I wanted some of y'alls loads. Thanks, Nick

Barnes has just released a "Varmint Grenade" in 6mm, 62 grain.

Varmint Grenade bullets feature a frangible copper/tin composite core. These fragment explosively upon impact.

Midsouth has 'em for $36.37 for BOX OF 250.

Barnes claims: "[This bullet] Virtually vaporizes ground squirrels and prairie dogs, even at extended range."

I don't have any feedback on accuracy though--bullets are too new. I'd try 'em with some AA 2230 if you have it. Otherwise H322.

Jacob, the 6 BR is no hot rod cartridge at all, and it usually takes speed to vaporize an animal with the body size of a crow.

400 yards is a long way, and the lighter more frangible bullets will shed a lot of velocity.

Having said this, a 55g Nosler BT loaded to the tilt with AA2230 will produce 3900 fps with a Rem 7 1/2 or CCI-BR-4 primer in a 24" barrel, 14 twist. I know that this load is good to 300, 400 may be pushing the envelope somewhat.

The 65g V Max with AA 2230 will push 3700 fps with extreme accuracy and it may be a good second or first choice, the fun is in the trying!

You don't always have a range finder handy, and I always missed more with the 70g bullets at 3350 because of the lousy trajectory. I never tried to bump up the velocity on the 70's because the bullets were not expanding much at all at 3350.

Everyone has a different take on how to accomplish this, there's more than one way to skin a cat for sure.

Good luck!

I see your point. Ran the ballistics with the two loads you posted. 400 is pushing it. Thats fine. They'll still be just as fun to shoot at. It looks like 200 yards is much more realistic if you really want to vaporize them. Thanks for your input. Any more loads out there? I need to make a shopping list. LOL

Stick one of the 66 grain Fowler flat bases into a crow at 350 yards and watch the feathers fly....

Well, if you're shooting a 6mm BR I would suggest a 65 grn. Hornady V-Max with Varget or N135. My personal favorite for crow fluffing is my .22-250 A.I. with a 50 grn. Nosler Ballistic Tip @4150 ft/s. A center of mass hit on a crow causes a black puff of feathers and the critter drops like a rock.

Best lower velocity poof is accomplished with Hornady SPSX bullets. I use them in 223 at 3300 and they have real nifty splat factor. I have some 70 gr 6mm's, they will come along on the next trip. They can't handle a lot of velocity cause they come apart.

Next best would be Vmax or Blitzking. they need a little more zip, though.
