Cronographed some loads for the 6SLR yesterday....

I had some interesting results cronographing some different loads yesterday for my SLR. My barrel is a 24" Kreiger that started life as a BRX and at 1200rds I had it re chambered to a 6SLR. This rifle is set up for tactical shooting so I cut it to 24"s and was planning on running a can for some of my shooting.

I tried the old standard, tried and true, load of 43.5grs of H-4831SC and it registered 2889fps with a 105HYB and a 107MK

The next load was my old load of 46.5grs of H-1000 and it registered 2982fps with the 107mk. The next load I tested was 41.5grs of HV-100. It registered 2921fps with the 107mk. The last load I tried was 43grs of 7828SSC. It registered 2890fps.

I guess I actually expected the HV-100 and the 7828SSC to be faster than my H1000 loads. I loaded up some more of each going up a grain to a grain and a half to see what happens. My barrel length may be the main factor holding back the velocity with these two powders. I might be burning the powder out the end of the barrel but will see how it turns out.

I was hoping for a load that would put me right at 3000fps with the 105s. All the loads showed some potential for accuracy so I will see what shakes out. I already know the 43.5grs of H4831SC shoots well but a little on the slow side....

Raptor, how much H1000 can you get in the 6SLR and seat your bullet to lenght without crushing it too bad? Also if your using a droptube, what length?

Thanks,
Don Dunlap

Not using a drop tube. I have had 47grs in with no problem. I will keep you posted on how the testing goes. Its hard to get out with melting snow now.

What Chrono?

I'm going to run some Magnetospeed numbers with mine tomorrow. 25" Hawk Hill barrel running 107s and I'm doing some load work with 105 Huntng VLDs for the occasional opportunity to shoot 'yotes.

We just chambered my new ruger precision with my 6slr reamer. We used a 26" barrel so that it could be used for tactical. This Saturday I tested up to my usual go to load of mid 44 of 7828 and got 3050 at 4200ft and 48 degrees. With my 28" barrel that same load is 3125 at 4200ft and 75 degrees. I even tested a couple tenths over the go to with no pressure. Well see how that holds up when it gets hotter.

Shot mine in the low 30 deg area Sat morning. 32" barrel with 105's that is shooting way slower overall than the last barrel.

With the new barrel:
N165 47.0gr to get the 3150fps node and decent
N160 44.5gr 1st time trial good node betwixt 44.0gr and 44.5. Wish that i had loaded some up at 45.0 just to see what it looked like, 44.5 = 3210fps, 5 shots, maximum spread was 12fps, sta dev was 4fps

Think I'm going to like the N160.

I'm using a Magnetospeed.

Today I tested velocities with N160 from 42 gr up to 44 gr.
25" barrel, .078FB reamer, 107 SMKs loaded to mag length jumping 10

I stopped at 44 grains with about 3035FPS. That's about as fast as I need them to go and I believe much more is going to get into hurting the brass. I'll do some group testing on both sides of 44 gr later. I expect that if I tried this powder would get me to 3100 without issue.

Cold outside, but I was loading inside and walking out on the deck and shooting, so the ammo and powder are mid 60s. No signs of excess pressure. I'm sure I could go higher, just not sure if it's worth it.

I had some H1000 loads, 47.2gr = 2880FPS.

I also have 7828ssc and N165 to test, though if I can get 3000+ with no pressure and good accuracy from N160 I don't see much point in testing others.

Some velocity numbers with 7828SSC
Started at 45gr, 2970FPS, very mild load primers looked factory
45.5gr, 3034FPS, still mild
Jumped up to 46.5gr, 3100FPS, and primers still look like I could go a lot higher.

I also tested 46.5gr with a 105 VLD Hunting with .010 jam and got 3110FPS.

I need to do group testing now, but it just started snowing here. I think it will be a while before I get out and shoot for groups but 3100 to 3150 is about all I want from this. Groups will decide.

I've tested mine several times and 43.5-43.8 of H4831 gets me either side of 2900. I've tested up to 44.6 and got to 2975. I stopped at 46.7 of H1000 and was at 2900. The RL 26 got me to 3150 with 46.5 I believe before I got pressure. I thought I had a slow barrel but it right in line with what you guys are getting. I've got a new Hawk Hill waiting to be spun up guess I better go out to 26". I wish the accuracy would have been there with the RL26.

I went a week ago yesterday and with a 22" barrel and Ohler chrono it was 4831sc 43.5 was 2930 and 45.3 was 3025...I felt like it should've been a little faster and those numbers are with a 7" suppressor. I expected a lot more difference in the two loads but they both seem to shoot pretty good. I did a ladder to get the hotter load but had never shot it over a chrono.

I think I'm going to try something else just not sure what...thanks for the ideas guys! A good buddy of mine mentioned trying 4000MR, anyone shot that yet?

I shot 4000MR a few years back when I couldnt get 4831. I ran it with DTACs and it was actually impressive at around 40.5 - 41 grains. Great groups and real decent speed. Hybrids became available and I found a keg of my beloved 4831sc, so I never tested it again....but I still wonder....since then I have found 7828 and 108s. Big node, fast, and super forgiving...gave up a slight bit o accuracy, but not a deal breaker in our windy games.

It was fairly calm this morning but cold out.( 24 degrees with a 3 to 5mph tail wind.) I didn't chronograph my loads but shot them at 300yds to test the accuracy potential and two really stood out over the rest. A load of 44grs of H4832SC had 4 in .880 and a load with 46.5 H1000 had 4 in .840. The other loads were showing to much vertical so that told me the load was off. I had two loads that had decent vertical with 7828 but had more horizontal than I like to see but then the wind had switched to a quartering wind and was picking up so I will reshoot these two again. The 46.5 of H1000 was the same load that shot really well in my other rifle. I know some guys can't get it to shoot well but so far I have been lucky with it.

I looked it up my H1000 load was 46.4. I only had a couple of lbs so is stayed with my H4831. Again right at 2900 and about .2 3 shot groups.

Your powder is completely burned in the first 10 or so inches of your barrel. Some powders will hold pressure a little longer than others but ALL powders (bullet velocity) are going to be faster with long barrels and slower with shorter barrels.

Not necessarily true. I don't run quickload, but I seem to recall discussion based on Quick Load data that shows some powders that are running well less than 100% burn in shorter barrels.

Thanks...I've got some on the way...I'll report back when I get a chance to do some testing!

WOW...it's fast. I'm running a 22" barrel with a Shark 8" suppressor...got it to 3300fps w/ 105 hybrid when it started showing pressure. The standard 4831sc load of 43.5 was 3070fps w/ 4000mr and it's slower burning powder. I was shocked.

I'm still tuning but know where the nodes are but if it'll shoot as fast as it is it should be a winner.
