Cream of wheat method to fireform 6br variants?

I see some folks try hydroforming instead of fireforming. Anybody successful using cream o wheat or cotton plugs with pistol powder to fireform?

I have done both. Hydro forming is much easier.

With pistol powder you neck up the case, and neck it back down to create a false shoulder to head space the case. Prime the case. Add 8-9 grains of pistol powder, fill the case with C.O.W., top off with a .17 caliber cleaning pach, and you are ready to fire.

Keep checking the barrel. The like to fill up with COW. Be ready to patch it out.

Have a stub made for a shotgun works the best . Break open single shot have the end relive where a sepent 22 case fits can just close the action.
The 22 case holds the case for pressure like a faulse shoulder and holds the powder in aim it straight up.BANG perfect case every time with the correct powder and amount.

I use the cow method with about 9 grs of bullseye and a hunk of toilet paper to plug it at the neck. The only trick is expanding and then sizing down the neck. For the Dasher, I expand with a K&M 6.5 expander then use my regular 6BR sizer, bring down the neck about 1/8th inch at a time. Constantly trying it to fit the rifle chamber. As soon as the bolt feels some pressure when chambering, stop and fire it off.

Did some today. I'm getting 90+% formed cases(22 BRDX). They headspace on their shoulder and will get that nice body/shoulder angle after powder/bullet firing. I can't go to a range to ff with the cow method, so I fire them in my shop or garage, BUT do so into a bale of fire retardant insulation. I cut an opening in one end of the bale. Insert a broom handle to form a small tunnel to the center of the bale. Insert barrel about a foot and WHHHUUUMMMPPP. Very quiet...they can't hear this from inside my house. I'v used same bale for a few thousand cow firings. One bad thing about cow: there will occ be a very hard caked area of cow on the inside of the shoulder. You can often see some whiteness and it is hell to get out. I'v noted this esp in 40° shoulder cases.

I stuffed my dasher cases with paper towels, and let my boys pull the trigger.. Cleaned it after I was done.

i mentioned i was seeing occ case ff with cow forming a very hard piece of baked cow on the inside of the shoulder. i reduced the cow and increased the size of cotton plug but still see this in 1 out of 5 cases. if not removed, i can see how it's presence could alter that cases performance...a flyer? i suspect the 40 degree shoulder plays a significant role in it's formation. 223 AI and dasher cases, being small might be affected if this is left inside.

If you havent had a problem using cream of wheat its because it just hasnt happened yet. Use pistol powder and a paper towel. Use a real load practicing. Get a hydroform die from whidden. Get a fireform barrel from your gunsmith. There are lots of good ways to get brass formed and using cream of concrete isnt one of em. You dont need a solid filler. Of course winter is coming up and these discussions do get out of control as the experts are snowed in.

When you say "perfect case every time"; what are the blow lengths you achieve?
And how consistent are the lengths to each other?
And how fussy is the correct powder and charge?

Donovan
98% plus nice sharp shoulders Last I did 1. 538 to 1.541 I always use a charge master and they all are the same. That changes with brass lots. Larry

Has anyone tried filling the case up to mid neck with clays/Clay dot and plug with modeling clay? Of course a false shoulder is needed. This works fabulous blowing a 220 Russian to PPC. I know a Dasher has way more going on, just wondering. I'm still FF Dasher cases with components and a worn out FF barrel.

A perfect case every time? 1.538 - 1.541… Maybe perfectly short, when the case starts out at 1.555+ Why not fire form with a bullet and get lengths around 1.550+ ? …….jim

When you chamber the stub you increase the shoulder to where a spent

when you chamber the stub you increase the neck shoulder long to where a spent 22 casing will fit and provide pressure on the case point it straight up snd shoot the case out. The 22 case provides pressure just like a faulse shoulder.
