Cratering on .223 Rem primers question.

Thanks guys for all the great info!!!!
I measured the pin (.067) and the hole thru the head is .073+(used a drill bit) so I called Greg and he is not bushing the Savage heads at this time(3 mos. out). I called PT&G and if I don't want to go thru redoing the head spacing it is a custom head at 125 and 6 to 8 weeks. I am waiting for Chris to call me back with the hole size on their head and then I will decide. I may wait for Greg and get one of his new firing pins and have it bushed in a few months.
As long as the createring is not a pressure indicator I will live with for now.

It's well-established that Savage actions have large firing pin holes (relative). It's also well-established that this can cause cratering and/or pierced primers, even at relatively modest pressures. I personally know several individuals that have had to have their Savage rifle firing pin holes bushed by Greg Tannel, because they had issues with pierced or cratered primers. I don't know a single individual that has had this issue with a Remy 700 or other type of action. I never stated that you can't get cratered or pierced primers with other types of actions. What I stated was that it can be an issue with Savage rifles even at moderate pressures. It CAN happen with Savage rifles, it DOES happen with Savage rifles, and one of the reasons is the size of the firing pin hole. If you wish to debate this fact or start an argument, look elsewhere, I'm not interested in debating it with you.

I can assure you that rem 700s has had the same issue for a long time. I currently own one in 223 that has a large pin hole. Not piercing but cratering. No big deal. Go to a magnum primer.

primer chart.png Help me out here. Why are you using magnum primers? They are .004 higher than 400s. Back off to 400s and see if any there's any difference. Having said that, I agree with previous posts. The firing pin/firing pin hole fit isn't helping anything.

One man's observation on pressure AND the 450s vs 400s.

The main reason I used the 450s is because I am cheap. I have 3k of the 450s and lots of 205Ms
and I did not want to stock any more primers. I am going to try the 205Ms next and check out the results.
I defiantly want to either replace the bolt head or have the stock one bushed.

Midway sells an oversized firing pin for R700 actions. I was having FTF issue with 2 of my 700 actions. I bought the oversized firing pin for one and fitted the hole to this new firing pin. Issue solved and no cratering. It was so good I did my other 2 actions. If you have a numbered drill set drilling out the hole a little undersized and then using the drill to team it to final size was about a 10 minute process. Even faster on the next 2

You have an undersized firing pin. It should measure .068 to .070. Some do slip though the "quality" dept. so the easiest thing to do is order another. You'll have to sign a waiver and fax to them but they'll sell it to you. I bought several and cherry picked the best one. Couple of bucks each so no big deal. All measured .0692 to .0699 and cured the blanking issue I had on mild loads.
