Craftsmen, engineers, toys and space travel. Time to lighten up

In light of some recent discussions concerning machine work, tolerances, egghead engineers and old school craftsmen, what happens when the space program goes against old school machinists to produce a simple toy..

Pretty neat.
I like that “miracle metal” they found for the tip.……high speed steel.

I am an “old school craftsman”, In my shop, we use liquid nitrogen to shrink stuff, and heat to expand stuff.

I feel confident I could machine a perfectly round and balanced top. Or at least as round and true as the head bearings on our Monarch EE tool room lathe will produce. Getting the high speed steel tip dead true might present a little problem, as it would be a second operation. They did it in a collet assembly on their tool grinder.

I like the way they get them spinning with the ball bearings on top. What RPM did they start at.?

I just might try it.

1500 rpm, about the 7 min mark of the first video.

I didn't see them starting the two tops at the same time. I wonder how exact they can really be, not that the finish will likely be close.

Spent my life in the toolroom of a Fortune 500 company. Had a boss that believed our time would be better spent doing production work. He made a commitment to machine several thousand connecting rods for the engine division, on a brand new but low- cost CNC mill. We could not bore them round enough to pass their inspection process. The boss didn't last long and I was glad to see him leave.

Believe it or not the pocket top world is pretty cool. There are several makers and they use all kinds of materials.
The quality of work they put out is amazing and many of them are self taught.
There are several that spin 30+ minutes spun by hand.
This one I can get 20 min hand spun.
It has an Aluminum center and a stainless outer ring with a ruby bearing.

That’s pretty cool.
the ruby rotating surface is really innovative.

I made one for my kid one night. Its got a ruby bearing but its kinda ghetto compared to a high end top. Ive never spun it on a proper surface though. It stays on my desk with a few other trinkets ive made over the years
Thats really cool Dusty. Try spinning it on a cheap makeup mirror from walmart. Looks like it would spin a good while.

I think the bottom part is too close to the ruby. It starts leaning and then drags. I need one of those bases and a top shelf top for my desk. Theyre cool to watch during the endless zoom calls

At my business, more times than not we have to do both.

That is why we are the premier Marine Machine Shop on the Gulf Coast.View attachment 1319980
LOL, did some work on a luxury yacht where the owner insisted the propeller shafts vibrated. Many tens of thousands of dollars later, a specialty inspection lab issued their report that the props and shafts were identical, true and perfectly balanced.
I would have loved to see the equipment they used to test this.
Having spent close to 60 hours in the engine room during sea trials, I'd have speculated the gear boxes, considering the harmonics I've experienced out of reducers many times.
