Craftsman Metal lathe

I have a small Craftsman metal lathe that I am trying to get a few parts for. Believe it to be a model 80 109-21270 6 inch. Works well but has some chatter in some applications due to lateral play.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sears/Craftsman always will slap their logo on other manufactured items (ie Craftsman chain saws are actually Poulin saws). If you can do some research you might be able to get to the root manufacturer of your lathe maybe then it might be easier to source replacement parts.

Clausing bought the Atlas name/brand many years ago. Not quite sure if your model was made by Atlas or not. I know some of the older small lathes were made by another company but it escapes me currently(like many things anymore :( ). Anyhow I bought all new parts for my 12x36 Craftsman/Atlas about 8yrs ago from them. Some prices make you suck air a bit but it is either buy new or take your chances at getting something decent from fleabay.

In fact I took a $400 hosing from a nice MN man who sold me a "Genuine" Craftsman/Atlas lathe bed that was "98%" condition. Until I got mine tore down to see the difference the bed had been remachined for some type of jig setup and was unuseable as it came. Also of those same "98% new genuine parts" the leade screw was incorrect but I had a good machinest redo it so I could at least use it. Bought the saddle which had a gib machined off for the cross slide so it was new but junk. On the apron he reminded me that the bevel gear that runs power crossfeed cost over $100 new which is what I paid for the complete apron. Well lo and behold it that valuable bevel gear had the key machined out of it and was total useless. I did get a new set of half nuts from it. YIPPY YIPPY I had those. So be very carefull what you buy and don't pay more than 1/2 of new.

Perhaps best to get new price from Clausing first if they happen to have the parts then you can see what to buy off fleabay and what to pay. Hope this helps.

On the bright side I pd $600 for my somewhat worn Craftsman 12x36 and stuck almost $900 in parts into it it is now like new and quite accurate I must say. Have several offers to buy it for as much or more than I have into it so guess I didn't do too bad. Hate to part with it as it keeps my nice minty Hvy 10 company.lol

Edit to add....go to the Practical Machinist website (currently I can't log on to give you a link?) as there is a ton of information on there and some really good gents with a whole lot of info and you can post in their wanted section also for parts if you cannot find them anywhere else.

Edit to add yet more :) ....I think I remember that some of the smaller early Craftsman lathes were made by Dunlap? So my guess is if it is that old and made by them finding parts would be an ebay thing only?
Respectfully,
Dennis

Yours is not an Atlas, it is a Dunlap lathe, and as light duty as the flat bed atlas machines were ,the dunlaps are even more so.
Clausing does not support the Dunlap lathes, your only option is used on Ebay or Home Shop Machinist Forum of or the chaski Home Machinist forum. Those light duty machines are not allowed to be discused on Practical machinist.
Honestly, money spent fixing up that machine would be better spent on purchasing a new machine, even a Chinese one.

Just to add to what akajun wrote, Check out the following URL. Great machine tool reference site. It should have your model.

Beware of a "heartbreaker" when you try to restore "old iron" to full function and precision.

Thanks for the responces. I do know that it was not made by Atlas. The 109 prefex tells who made it. It was made by AA or something like that. I do believe that there is enough quality in this piece to make small parts. I replaced the chuck a few years back with a three jaw. A friend purchased it for me for about $80. Then he had to make a back plate for it, but did not charge for it. I will check out the webb sites.

Just checked out this link - fascinating for this novice machinist! :) Thanks rmist!

My dad left his old Atlas lathe in the attached 3-car garage for me when he & Mom moved to town 20+yrs ago. I piddled with it, using it mainly for cartridge case prep chores, before purchasing my heavy 13x40 & 14x40 lathes for gunsmithing work.

After I bought a Jet vertical mill, I was able to mill the Atlas compound & fit a Phase II chicom knock-off AXA wedge-type QC tool post, which has a little more rigidity than the lantern-style tool post. Even after spending a 'few dollars more' on extra AXA tool holders, new live center, and new keyless chuck to fit the Atlas, it's use is very limited. I think Dad gets more use out of it than I do, though I continue to use it regularly for case prep work, and would hate to try to do without it for that reason alone.
