Coyotes eat pears?!?!

I've had pics of them eating corn out my bait pile.

lol My German Shepard loves corn and chicken poo. Toss out some corn or scratch she will come trotting over to belly up just like the chickens. I do not know why she likes it but she does. Yell at her and she will move off then come right back.

Coyotes aren't picky, whatever fills their belly. I have seen many a thing not eat a coyote though, even some ravens turn their nose at a yote carcasse.

In Texas they will eat Mesquite beans....... survivors... Yep.

He##, I like the mesquite beans myself! Used to eat the heck out of them when I was young, (ummmm sweet) and went on lizard hunting expeditions!! Texas and New Mexico best tasting cottontails in the world! They eat the bean and the bark off of the mesquite bush.

I hunt around apple orchards and truck farms. Lots of apple peels in the scat, the strange ones are where they have been eating carrots, they look just like a pie of chopped carrots and still bright orange.

Years ago I lived in San Diego and it was routine to see the coyotes eating avocados off of the ground. They always had the best pelts around that time of the year....

So many here seemed surprised to discover coyotes don't eat only meat. Somewhere in nearly any formal description of Canis latrans is the scientific term "omnivore" referring to their diet. In the fall particularly, they'll eat a lot of berries and fruit if present, as well as insects like grasshoppers.

Here are 2 photos taken 24 hours apart. Apparently our local golden eagles, turkey vultures, ravens, and magpies aren't too particular. :)

P.S. The head is missing in the second photo because I wanted the skull.

Could not other coyotes have eaten some (are they ever cannibalistic)? FWIW the California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi) common around here is. Splatter one on a desert rock pile, and soon several more might well venture out to start feeding on the remains.

According to (ahem) Wikipedia: The coyote readily cannibalizes the carcasses of conspecifics, with coyote fat having been successfully used by coyote hunters as a lure or poisoned bait.

That carcass appears to have been mauled by something more aggressive than a Golden Eagle or Raven, since the pelvis area is spread open and the upper leg bones splayed. My hunch is two or more coyotes were tugging on the leg bones.

Coyotes do eat their dead, but when that happens the bones are broken/gone. From the way the meat is picked clean from the bones in the photo you can tell that this particular coyote was eaten by birds. Not to mention the giant eagle slice next to the coyote's left front foot. :) Heck, the magpies were on it before I even got back to the truck.

A 10+ pound golden eagle can easily splay a coyote open. A hungry golden eagle can catch, kill, and eat (part of) an adult coyote. Historically, golden eagles were used by falconers to hunt wolves. Eagle vs. wolf is a fair fight, with the outcome in doubt.
